The term actually originated with servicepeople who had been around too much fighting and were mentally shellshocked. They were unable to deal with the stress and thence the term. It was made most famous by the scene in the movie Patton. and, if ya don't understand the reference, rent the movie.

It also happens if you're in an auto accident or a traumatic situation. It's simply "shock".....and it feels like you're going through the motions of life, but you're not really there.
