As I look through my modem at your tooth, I'm liking jlouise8's answer the best. Throbbing teeth are usually dead. The throbbing is from the bone at the end of the tooth and not actually from the tooth itself.
How would you know if your tooth is dead? You need a dentist to determine that. A tooth can die for many reasons other than having a cavity. The most common reason is trauma, but that trauma could have been 5 years ago or even more. Think about whether you got hit with a ball, bumped the floor (It happens!), took an elbow in the mouth, or something else like that in the last 5 or 6 years or so and maybe that's what killed your tooth.

Usually the reason a tooth throbs is because it is dying, when a tooth dies it creates gasses inside the tooth causing the tooth to throb because the gasses have nowhere to go. You need to see a dentist he can give you antibiotics and start a root canal in which will make the tooth feel better.

You need to see a dentist. Ear and tooth aches have a tendency to really hurt very bad. They say it is because they are closest to the brain. At any rate see a dentist ASAP.You have a cavity and the pain will not go away.
I know...going to the dentist is a dreaded event but you don't have a choice. From him there will be little or no pain and it will be over before you know it.
Trust me.

Good chance you have an abscess tooth. You should call your dentist right away. He may order you some antibiotics and pain medication if it is after hours and schedule you to see him in the morning.
Don't let this go untreated. Teeth are very close to the sinuses and the vascular system there has a direct route to the heart. It could lead to a more serious infection.

I would want to rule out a cavity or a problem with the gums. Either of these a dentist will be able to look at and rule out.

ABCESS maybe? Go to the dentist.. An abcess can cause you to lose your tooth if left untreated or worse you could have the infection go throughout your entire body!!!!! Go see the dentist. You can get an emergency appointment.

you have a cavity. Most cavities you cant see until it is so far along you need a root canal. Quick, get to the dentist and get it taken care of, cause root canals suck!

the nerve is dying, you're probably going to need a root canal but at least that will save the tooth.
