Every religion stresses modesty but Islam is the only one that has followers who, for the most part, abide by it. Nuns cover up, and in the Old Testament it actually tells women to cover their hair. I think wearing a head scarf is a personal choice and I don't think it's mandatory.

To answer your question, it is important to be modest because God knows how people work. Guys probably wouldn't be as fixated on women if they covered up more. It's to keep people from lusting after each other (thinking impure thoughts, which is a sin) and then, conclusively, fornicating with those people (which is also a sin). It's just a preventive measure.

Women who wear burqas and veils, however, do so because of the culture that they are in. It's very hot in Middle Eastern countries and covering up protects them from the sun. Also, women have been wearing burqas there for thousands of years in order to be protected from rape and things of that nature. They feel safe wearing that type of clothing.

Christians also dress modestly when they go to church in order to respect God. But shouldn't we respect God all of the time and respect ourselves as well? This thinking also contributes to why modesty is important.

okayokay,

Maybe a few of these links can remove your "confusion". Islam does more than just "encourage" modesty. It requires women to be veiled. The head to toe body sack worn by the women oppressed by the Taliban is fully justified in the Koran. Osama Bin Laden, although radical in our view, is a good muslim. He is interpreting the Koran literally.

Believe you me. You don't want to live under a world wide Caliphate ruled by Sharia Law (Islamic Law). The faster we all get up to speed on this worldly menace the better for all of us.

Not sure if you mean modest as in being humble or Modesty as in being Chaste..both important

As for being humble, it is a state of being a lack of pride, and so u don't look down at others and you concentrate more on your faults. In islam the more you humble yourself to god's creation the more god raises you in his sight.

As far as being chaste and not revealing yourself .. simply becoz it entices others and leads to temptation. Which is why men are ordered to lower their gaze and women to cover themselves.

According to my Muslim friends, it is a means to help keep their minds on what is more important in life. By being modest, people tend to act better and behave themselves, they don't focus on impure thoughts or actions. So say my friends.
