To really figure out if a tomato is a fruit or vegetable, you need to know what makes a fruit a fruit, and a vegetable a vegetable. The big question to ask is, DOES IT HAVE SEEDS?

If the answer is yes, then technically, you have a FRUIT. This, of course, makes your tomato a fruit. It also makes cucumbers, squash, green beans and walnuts all fruits as well. VEGETABLES such as, radishes, celery, carrots, and lettuce do NOT have seeds (that are part of what we eat) and so they are grouped as vegetables.

Now don't go looking for tomatoes next to the oranges in your grocery stores. Certain fruits like tomatoes and green beans will probably always be mostly referred to as "vegetables" in today's society.

Well, some consider it a fruit others a vegetable. Personally, I consider it a veggie, because:

1. I use it to cook my stew
2. I eat it with my "veggie salad"
3. It's grown as all other veggies....
4. When we order a veggie tray at work, we get all sorts of veggies including the little tomatos with the dip...

I think that it's technically a fruit, but it is served like a vegetable, since it's a bit acidic and isn't generally very sweet (except cherry and pear tomato varieties that, when served fresh off the vine and not refrigerated, tend to be a bit on the sweet side)... Go figure.

And I quote (from wikipedia.com / thefreedictionary.com): "Botanically a fruit, the tomato is generally thought of and used as a vegetable: it's more likely to be part of a sauce or a salad than eaten whole as a snack, let alone as part of a dessert (though, depending on the variety, they can be quite sweet, especially roasted)."

A tomato is a fruit - anything that produces a flower while it is growing, is considered a fruit. I learned this while I was taking a nutrition class.
