The above answer is pretty much correct.

LaVey's group is about the worshiping of self and trying to satisfy ones carnal appetite. They really don't believe in Satan as an entity.

Other forms of Satanism really believe in the guy with red pajamas, horns and a tail.

The traditional church of satanism is a religion that worships the devil, including animal (or human) sacrifice, etc. Officially, the Anton LeVey church of satan doesn't believe satan is real. Instead they celebrate the ideal of satan as the epitome of hedonism.

BTW - I don't believe that they are telling the truth. I don't think there is any difference, but that's what they claim is the official difference.

I don't think there was a traditional "church" of satanism before LaVey "formalized" it (ha.)

LaVey's "church" is for "Goth Talk" kids, poseurs, wannabes, and other assorted losers. I saw a documentary on the devil or the antichrist or something like that on the History Channel. They filmed an actual Black Mass--so freakin' lame! Unbelievably lame! Ugh. I don't even want to think about those jackasses anymore. I'm out.

I try to not learn anything about them. When I was younger my neighbors were into satan worship. I asked to see their satanic bible and it scared the beheebeegeebees out of me! That stuff is real, evil, and scary. I'll stay in the Bible.
