The old way is much better. Now, military is a job similiar to any other. Just like any job, people need to justify their existence.
In the old days, there was no permanent military. There was a very small force, with the capability of being built up rapidly when the need arose. When people joined the military, they new it was for a specific purpose. When that purpose was finished, they got out. It made for a very goal oriented military.
The other plus of the old ways, was we didn't have politicians telling war fighters how to fight a war. They were told what to do, and they were let do it. These days, you have people being fired left and right for making mistakes. Admiral Nimitz ran his ship aground when he was an ensign. He went on to become one of the most famous Naval Officers in history. Today, if you run your ship aground, your career is over without a second thought. When you create a zero tolerance environment, you create a zero risk taker military.
SGT Noyam, I am sure that HIGH SCHOOL has given you a WIDE perspective of our military today - but do you really believe that morality was any better back then? Or was it that the media wasn't sniffing up our buts at every turn? Did you know that in World War II, there was a zero prisoner mentality among our troops. It was much easier to kill someone, then it was to take them prisoner. You don't hear about that as much, because the military had a very tight reign on the media - and politicians stayed out of it and let the military accomplish its tasks - which it did brilliantly.

Over all the new Army, even though the Army has made some decisions that made me wonder, such as "Berets"etc
One thing I still think its a problem is the family support. Lets face it, the Army will never be family friendly, I sure hope not, but at least some help with child care and housing would be nice!!!! As far as physical training, I think this one is better in the long run, if you dont believe me ask any vet that served for a while, what kind of pain they still have to deal with on an everyday basis.
The Army training is better and there is still a lot of nonsense. But what do you expect? Its the Army.

I have to qualify this by saying I've never been in the army so this is just from observation. I don't want to cast aspersions on any members of the armed forces that have fought in wars especially vietnam vets, but i will have to say that I had a definite prejudice against the army during that period because of the way they trained and did things. The elite units have always been good but at times the regular army units suffered from a lack of morale and discipline. My personal feeling is that the army has improved dramatically. I believe they are much more professional and disciplined. My only concern is recent news that they are easing up in recruit training. I believe boot camp should be tough mentally and physically. Making things easier in order to attract more recruits is not a good idea. Bottom line is I think todays military including the army is the best trained we've ever had.

Having done 13 years in the British army starting off from 1980 and seeing and also talking some Ex forces Friends , there is a big difference on the type of forces personnel who were in in the 60s to the 2006 were the British Armed forces have had to implement a lot of changes in the selection of Recruits who want to Join the forces today.
The generations have changed dramatically which has had a big impact because technology in warefare has a dramatic effect in how we survive in an event or a war etc etc.
Personally I would of liked to see the old training method used to train soldiers in there new equipment they use today.

Well this Non-Comissioned Officer has this to say:" We're not as good as we once was. But we will always be as good once as we ever was." Berets? Got over that years ago. New Army Combat Uniform? Getting used to it. Switch from Army Green to Army Dress Blue as "the" service uniform? I like it. Old vs New Army? Doesn't matter. We will always be here. And we're the best there has ever been....... now if we can just beat Navy this season.

A typical soldier in the 'new' Army is smarter, better trained and has more initiative than one from the 'old Army.'

i ought to assert that area of it is the area about being given away. Adoptees already do not forget that toddlers get given away. So, in the experience that they are not solid sufficient, what's to stop -those- mom and father from giving them away? And definite, that is particularly ridiculous even as that is placed into words, yet as with many adoption topics, that is an emotional reaction no longer an psychological reaction. So although if 2 toddlers (a million bio, a million followed) are raised with a similar criteria and expectancies, i imagine the issue of relinquishment is going to make the rigidity extra acutely felt by the adoptee extremely than by a bio youngster.

the new army berets are gay and so are the new uniforms.
