The Thin Red Line is one of the best war movies of modern times (it's also considered one of the best antiwar movies as well.)

The HBO series "Band Of Brothers" is one of the best depictions of the ETO (Euro.Theater Ops.,WW2) I've seen, and I highly recommend the series.

Saving Private Ryan was too Hollywood, but the opening scenes of the beach assaults were maybe the best depiction of a D-Day landing ever brought to film. From WW2 Vets I've talked to, I gather it at least gave a glimpse of the pure hell those landings were.

I won't bother listing all the bad or poorly done movies, except to say that Jarhead sucks. Three Kings was better than that.

Blackhawk Down -- Ridley Scott got a good sense of an urban fire fight on film in that one.

We Were Soldiers was more of Mel Gibson being Mel Gibson. That film can only be described as Mel's own "Green Berets" -- he managed to turn a good book into a hackneyed, trite movie.... It probably would have been a better movie if someone other than Mel ahd done it.

Another TV series I liked was "Over There" set in Iraq. Not bad for TV, but a little cutesy at times and preachy at other times. WTF, it's TV.

Enemy at the Gates was fair, but the film did not sustain tension as it could have. I fell asleep the first time I saw it.

Blackhawk Down constantly gets good reviews. So does Jarhead. Personally I have not seen either.

There is always Saving Private Ryan. I also like Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

There is also Windtalkers, but I didn't like that movie - but I'm not a fan of John Woo movies.

edit - a quick comment on knodds selections:
The Last Samurai - excellent
Pearl Harbor - horrible
The Thin Red Line - also excellent
