Your cat is trying to pass a hairball by throwing it up. Sometimes, if it's large then he won't be able to get it up and only liquidy stuff will come up. This happened to my cat a year ago when he had a very bad hairball. You can give your cat something to pass the hairball called Petromalt or ask a pet store for something similiar that will lubricate his insides and allow him to expel it. Eventually, if it gets really bad and he can't pass it, he will stop eating and going poo. So, I'd say, if the hairball doesn't come out either by him throwing it up or passing it by going poo within 48 hours, get him to a vet. Mine was able to finally pass it through his poo, but I was minutes away from taking him to the vet. It was that bad. Just keep a close eye on him. Good luck!

How old is the cat? It could be heartworms. My dog vomits with more acitivity because of hers (though she's on treatment which breaks them up).

It could also be a tape worm. Has he been dewormed lately?

Could also be hairballs.

Dehydration symptoms are vomitting and diarhea. How's the weather and is he going outside a lot for extended periods of time?

Is it an outdoor cat? They will eat grass if they have an upset stomach, and then what comes out can be like that. Make sure your cat hasn't been eating houseplants either.

Sounds like someone else had the same trouble once before. See this question. But please, don't risk it and just take him to an emergency vet:
