They have been for years and now its biting us in the a**.
Oil companies and coal companies run them.
Thats why there is not that much alternative energy being produced.

Power companies are highly regulated and often operate on fairly small profit margins. They care more about stability and predictability than effecting any kind of particular change. However, they are like any other business, when enough of their customers start demanding something, they'll eventually come around.

In the sense of renewable energy - many state governments are now implementing renewable portfolio standards to force utilities to buy renewable electricity products.
