A lunge is a step forward and down on one leg then back up.
A squat is straight down on both legs and back up.
Both are done with weight on a bar that you hold across your shoulders. These can be dangerous exercises if done wrong. Best to have a trainer walk you through them. Maybe one hour max to show you the ropes.

Not a dumb question. Most people don't even know of lunges and those that do think they're reserved for women.

As a chiropractor and an amateur bodybuilder, I recommend the lunge over the squat. The squat places the knees and other joints in a vulnerable position throughout different areas of the movement.

Squat ... feet parallel and shoulder width apart.lower body and weight towards the floor, return to starting position. When was the last time you did that in your everyday life?

Lunge ... take one step forward leaving the rear foot planted. Again lower the body and weight towards the floor. do your set of repetitions and repeat with the other leg forward. This is a much more natural movement, and your joints will be thanking you later in life.

A squat is performed with your feet shoulder width apart, the barbell across your shoulder blades, palms holding the bar facing outward. You then slowly lower your glutts (butt) to a near seating position, hold for a beat and then raise.

A lunge is done with a barbell in each hand down by your sides. Start feet together then step forward with your right or left foot about 24 inches out so the foot you stepped out with is almost at a 90 degree angle at the knee. Step back with that foot and repeat with the other.

Squats are taking a bar and hoding over your shoulder while you bend (or squat) down and then back up, in the same place. Lunges are taking two dumbells in each hand, while walking and bending your knees until they are very close to touching the ground.

Squat is a power move and builds mass and lunges are a higher rep shaping exercise.

when you do a lunge you have one leg out in front of you that is slightly bent and one leg straight and then you "lunge" forward while bending the front knee.
During a squat you would keep your legs about shoulder lenght apart and bend both knees at the same time.

lunges are one leg at a time, and squats are both legs. usually when doing lunges, you would move down a hall or such. with squats you would stay in one place.
