Well, crack cocaine works really well, but when I don't have any of that it's always nice to talk to someone who loves you or can make you laugh. Or watch my favorite comedy. That's a tough one though, emotional ruts suck balls.

This is a really good question and I'm looking forward to reading the answers.
I try to avoid those things that are unpleasant and focus on those things that make me happy. I noticed that I was waking up with a laundry list of awful tasks that must be done. I'm trying to shift that to waking up with thoughts of what I would like to do during the day.
One problem I had was that I couldn't identify the things that made me happy and that were within my poor budget. I think many people have this problem and find that eating comfort food is an easy solution although obesity is no prize.
What I discovered is that I enjoy entertainment. My public library seemed to have the worst collection of movies and music on its shelves. Then, I discovered that they actually have everything and I just had to reserve the good stuff. So every day for free, I pick up a handful of CDs and movies and do my work to these. I also joined iTunes and Netflics.
I also like sitting in the library reading magazines. It is fun to glance at the covers of 100 magazines and pick out the topics that most interest me.
Writing a journal, taking a warm bath and getting a massage have also been affordable treats.
This site makes me feel better.
What I try to do now when I wake up is to get my mood up by doing something I look forward to, then I'll tackle some chores as long as I can maintain my mood.

think of nice things like flowers and other happy things. try riding your bike or playing a game with friends.
EDIT: dont listen to gumpy. dont do drugs, it'll make you worse and you'll be depressed not to metion the health effects that it'll have on you. just try to do some fun stuff, not drugs.

Get up a half hour early each morning and exercise. Try it and you'll get an uplifted feeling that lasts all day. You'll feel good about yourself.

Do sth that you that will make you happy, sth that you like to do. If you like crafts, then do some crafts. If you like to bake or play a music intruction, then do so.
