The WEAPON you carry is decided by your MOS (Military Occupation Specialty). The only GUNS in the Military are cannon, like artillery, auto cannon etc. You can’t carry a gun by definition.

Most people are issued a M16A1 to M16A3 rifle, and each squad has two M203 Grenade Launchers attached to their M16s. Each platoon is issued a M60 machine gun. In the Infantry you would get a SAW instead of the old Vietnam Era M60. Some vehicles have mounts to carry M1 (50 caliber) machine guns. These are only meant to be used against vehicles. They have no penetrating power against armored vehicles like tanks, but they can destroy most vehicles and aircraft.

Officers carry the 9mm Beretta, as well as pilots. This is because they are not expected to fight on the front lines. Pilots fight with their aircraft not their side arms. They only carry side arms because they need a means to defend themselves in case if they are overrun. For pilots a side arm is required if they have to bail out and end up in enemy territory. Tankers usually carry side arms because it is hard to move a rifle around in the tight confines of a tank or self-propelled artillery piece.

The only people who carry sniper rifles are snipers. They have to graduate sniper school and hold a sniper MOS. Otherwise they carry the weapons that are typical for their unit; usually M16 rifles.

Shotguns were carried during Vietnam because of the close quarter fighting. It was hoped that when you couldn’t see the enemy, but knew his direction that a shotgun would help kill the enemy. But, shotguns are poor fighting weapons. You can use it as a scattergun, which has an effective range of a little more than 20 feet; otherwise you need to fire a slug. If you use a slug then you have to know where the enemies are hiding. M203 Grenade Launchers can fire a shot round. These rounds are more powerful than a shotgun and have a better penetration value, so the shotgun is rarely used anymore. The M203 wasn’t invented until after the Vietnam War. Until that point an entirely separate weapon was need to fire grenades.

The M16 uses a round the same size as a .22 caliber rifle, but the firing charge is much stronger. The M16 has little armor penetrating ability, and doesn’t often kill a man. The round is strong enough to penetrate any body armor and cause serious wounds. This is intentional, because the Geneva Convention says that weapons should be used to disable, not necessarily kill. The military agrees with this since one wounded person is worth three soldiers. The wounded man has to be treated, and carried away from the battle, and the person carrying the wounded man has to be guarded by another.

The military issues a person their weapons and has a very good rational for which weapons they may use. If you serve, you don’t have a choice on which weapon you may use-----Sorry about that.

Sickcured has a good point the AK47 is more reliable than the M16

When I Was In The Army,We Played With Our GUNS...We Fought With Our Weapons,A Good Soldier Is As Proficient With As Many Weapons Systems As The Training He Undertakes Will Allow Him,Many Soldiers Are Trained In Multiple Jobs,It Is Usually The Career Soldiers That Are The Best Trained And Therefore Have The Training To Use Multiple Platforms(Its All In The Training)Personal Preference Was A 50 Caliber Automatic,There Were Several Systems I Adored, But As A Foot Soldier I Would Have Preferred The 50.I Think There Are More Modern Weapons Now, I Left In 1979

most troop are issued a M16 rifle, or the M4 depending on what division they are in. with in there squad there would be a M249 SAW (squad automatic weapon), and M203's, a 40mm low velocity grenade launchers under the barrel of there rifles. there are some semi-auto shotguns mounted under the barrel also for door breaching, others use a pistol grip shotgun for this. there would also be with in the unit some heaver weapons, such as the M240 general purpose machine gun, the M2 .50 caliber machine gun, and the Mk 19 automatic grenade launcher (the last two being mounted weapons, not carried). the unit commander would have a M9 9mm pistol (also carried by medics pilots, and MP's), 12 ga pump action shotguns are used for guard duty, snipers use custom built rifles, or the M82 (.50 BMG rifle).

Depends on the job. Some tactical teams have one guy that has the 12 gauge shotgun. Another member will carry a submachine gun, then there's a saw, a couple of riflemen, and a bazooka and mortor man. All carry pistols

M16A2, M-4(Smaller M16), M203(M16A2 w/Grenade Launcher) 240B(Machine Gun), M9 (pistol), SAW(Squad Automatic Weapon)50 Cal Machine Gun...some times a 12 Ga Shotgun...That is what the basic infantry man (or other Combat Arms)would...if you are not infantry(or Combat Arms) only the M16A2, M9, and maybe the M4 and a few others....SF gets to use weapon of choice....

You use what they give you. M16 or M4 for your main weapon and maybe a pistol or rifle mounted grenade launcher (M203).

If you are a gunner in a truck you might be on a .50 cal machine gun (M2) or an automatic grenade launcher (MK 19).

If you work with prisoners you may have a shotgun.

I say may because you don't have a choice, you learn to use whatever they tell you to learn.

First, AK's aren't all that accurate. Secondly, if I were to choose, my main weapon would be an M4, simply because it is the most versitile. As a handgun, I'm partial to the new H&K USP 45 Compact Tactical. It's small and concealable, but it powerful w/ the .45 round, and can accept a supressor.

I was in charge of the arms room, I assigned myself and M9 in garrison, but whenever it was time to deploy, I got an M203, for myself too. and my soldiers were assigned a MK19. Different waepons, different needs, you need to be covered in case of anything. usually M4 is the way to go!!!!
They way to assign weapons comes from the MTOE,modified table of allowance (toe or tda) It tells you everything from weapons authorized to who gets it. The CDR and the PLT SGT has some leadway by assigning people to a certain "job". and that job has a weapon assigned. So unless you are an armorer with some rank or pull, you get what you get!!
Did you know that Army weapons are supplied by the lowest bidder???? It makes me think...
