Whenever the issue of abortion comes up everyone brings up the notion of rape/incest, mom's life being endangered, not being able to raise a kid. Why doesn't anyone bring up the notion of genetic disorders or birth defects?

I had a family friend who found out while she was pregnant that her daughter's stomach was where her heart was. Even though doctors told her the baby would have a slim to none chance of making it to her first birthday she had the baby anyway. The baby wen through major surgery every week of her life. she died just before surgery #40. Her parents are stuck with a $40 million medical bill after insurance.

You can give me your opinion of why or why not. I just want to know why no one ever brings that notion up?

It is because a lot of people are christian and feel that abortion violates one of the commandments. This topic will never be resolved because there will always be religion and there will always be free will. I am pretty sure that subject does get mentioned quite a bit when arguing pro-choice as it is a very good argument but it is not near enough to resolve the issue.

My guess is because most people are unconcerned with having a baby with a genetic condition. If I found out my baby was at high risk for having a genetic condition or any other disorder, I wouldn't abort him or her. Medicine is not an exact science...doctors can be (and quite often are!) wrong.

With my first son, I was told by my ob/gyn that I more than likely had an ectopic pregnancy and they needed to do surgery to remove it. I asked what the chances of miscarriage were if it turned out to be something as minor as a cyst, and he said 50-50. I grabbed my purse, walked out the door, and went on (months down the line, obviously!) to deliver a healthy, beautiful, blue eyed, blonde haired baby boy.

At the end of that day, it's the womans choice whether or not she wants to have an abortion. No matter what the circimstances, you can't judge anyone because you're simply not in their situation. I'm 19, single and 35 weeks pregnant. I personally chose not to have an abortion but I would NEVER judge someone who has. Whether it was because they were raped, because of birth defects or simply because they felt they weren't ready. It's their choice. The only thing that bothers me is that people are allowed to have abortions when they're so far along in pregnacy. I think it should be limited to 12 weeks.

People do have abortions for this reason. Sometimes a doctor will recommend an abortion if he thinks the baby will have a serious birth defect. But many people do not believe in abortion and sometimes doctors are wrong. Sometimes parents hope that their child will survive and be well.. This maybe the case for your friend.

It's hard to remember that birth defects, etc. are a very real consideration because abortion is such a "hot button" issue. Most women, I believe, are more pro-choice or neutral about abortion, than are men whose business it really is less about. . .

yeah, there's rape, incest, thoughtless sex-- and birth defects too. You spoke about the money. What about the pain? Baby's and parents.

People have to have options-- it is a very imperfect world. It's hard to know, and sometimes choices involve the "lesser of two evils". My heart goes out to your friends, and I applaud you for having the courage to bring this up. Take care.

seems to me that people are scared to bring that up because there are many people who Can live as normal life as possible, even w/ genetic defects. for example, being mentally challenged, or having no arms, or strange body placement (as in ur family friend's heart). once we are able to start choosing which defects are "ok" and which are "not", eventually it will get more and more debatable until people will Want to abort a baby who may have an irregular heartbeat or asthma or something (i dunno, whatever future holds in terms of knowing what kind of diseases/weaknesses babies have). u'll never know what would happen, that baby could have lived, and that $40 million bill may have been completely worth it to the parents. its harder to make the decision to abort a baby when there are parents out there waiting and waiting to have a baby, and it turns out there is "something wrong" with him/her.. =T

i was born with spina bifida myelomeningocele. my mother could not take care of me, because she didnt have a husband and was too young to support me. but she didnt abort me, even though she knew before i was born that i had a birth defect. instead, she gave me up to the state. they paid my medical bills (which was about $3 million) and put me up for adoption. i pulled through. i am now with a good family that can take care of me. i'm an honor student, ranked #10 in my class.

what i'm trying to say is that an abortion is a cowardly way out. there is always a chance for survival. if nothing else, give the child up to the state. they will take care of the bill.

women confronted with an undesirable being pregnant have purely 3 techniques. None of those techniques are easy possibilities. maximum folk comprehend (albeit unconsciously) that a fetus isn't like a baby. even as human beings say abortion must be criminal for rape or incest, it is because they comprehend that the way a woman feels about a being pregnant in those circumstances is more effective significant than a "ability existence." yet even as a woman needs to terminate a being pregnant because she "would not experience waiting" or "isn't financially or emotionally reliable," those causes do not trump a fetus. yet you mustn't legislate causes. it is kinda like divorce. some human beings get divorced for infidelity or abuse, yet numerous human beings get divorced for "irreconcilable ameliorations." perchance there are a minority of human beings accessible that get married and divorced plenty. yet ought to divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable ameliorations be against the law? human beings shouldn't ought to stay in an unhappy marriage, pretty because the authorities mandates it by using regulation. it is even moreso with toddlers. women should not be compelled to have a toddler and raise it or compelled to have a toddler and promises it up for adoption. As a professional-determination believer, women should not be compelled to have an abortion both. women who're compelled to do some thing they don't favor to do will be apologetic about it, will be green with envy, will be unhappy. women who opt for abortion are not stupid. They comprehend what they're doing. They comprehend in themselves that they can't/shouldn't/do not favor to have a toddler. it truly is a own determination that a pregnant female ought to make with a health care professional.

i had a friend who had an abortion because her baby only had one arm. i have never been in the situation where i had to decide i am pregnant with my 2nd. i know someone real close to me who had an abortion. i qont say why because it's quite personal and i promised her i wouldn't but i am totally standing behind her for it.
what really upsets me is how people think they have a right to call other people murderers for doing it. it's not their life and they don't know what they are going through. i am not one for an abortion either but what other people do is really none of my business. i am however glad your friend decided to keep the baby even with a small chance of living she gave that baby the chance of life and she is very strong for doing that although it caused her heartache....
anyway thats my opinion...
