Asking about the hostels of Europe is like asking if all dogs are stupid, it's too blanket a generalization. There are great hostels that are like hotels (Depending on if you're staying dorm-room style or private room) Or like the ultimate roach hotel (BJV in Paris you have to continously push the shower button for cold water to come out) I have had great hostel experiences (This nice one in London next to the Tower Bridge) & horror stories (BJV, with the water button & the we 'reserved' the hostel for 4 nights & yet, they lost our reservation) You need to say what cities you're going to & then find hostels for each specific city, & there are a TON of guides for that.

The hostels in the books already mentioned (Let's Go! and Lonely Planet) and also websites like hostelbookers.com are a good place to start looking. Don't forget to ask around, it's a good bet that someone in the hostel you're in has been to the city you're going to and can give you an idea of some places to check out (and some to avoid).

I absolutely love hostels. I started staying at them when I was in my teens and still do in my fifties. Are they safe? Well, I have found that the ones in northern Europe are cleaner, safer and all around a better experience but, I have met people from all over the world in hostel and when they come to the US they stay with me and when i go to their country, I stay with them. I usually hook up with people who are going my way and just have a ball. You should buy one of the traveling books. My favorite has always been "let's go" but, there are many out there. Sleep with your valuables under your head or in your pockets ( I wouldn't suggest bring grandmother's antique ring), use a money belt and try to ind a pal to watch your stuff while you shower.
