Yes....2 Years ago.

Bring lots and lots of water. The whole town is stone, bricks and dirt, therefore it acts like an oven. You will be very, very thirsty and there are very few working fountains.
Besides that, it is an awesome place to visit. Bring lots of good film in a good camera. You will use it all.
It is an amazing experience. You will literally walk, sit and stand in places where ancient Romans used to walk, sit and stand including the arena where gladiators used to fight. A map would greatly help as the place is quite big. It is a real town after all. You should also keep ion mind that they have not finished escavating it, so there will be much more to see in a few years.
Like I said it is an amazing experience.
If you have the time and money a guide is worthwhile too. They really explain a great deal
Once you are done, do not forget to visit the fresh lemonades and orange juice stands just outside. They are great for thirst and health.
Good luck and have fun!!

I did a self-guided tour of Pompeii in April. It was interesting, but I definitely wish I'd got a map of the site beforehand and planned a route. The site is HUGE and streets are very poorly marked, so you can find yourself walking in circles (in the sun- there isn't any shade). In Campania, I actually preferred Paestum. This is an archaeological site that houses ancient Greek temples- they are AMAZING. Herculaneum is great too- there is a lot of organic material preserved there, like wood and rope. Pompeii is fun, but go with a guided tour or plan your route in advance. And bring a frozen bottle of water (it'll thaw in half an hour).

Yes while i was deployed over seas with the navy we had stop in Italy and they had a tour to Pompeii, It was nice to see history. It was said because you can see the people and what they were doing at the time the volcano explored. Some were sitting at dinner others were sleeping and the real said thing was seeing the ashes of the kids. It was real said to see.

Yes it's wonderful. A highly valuable source of Roman antiquity as far as historians are concerned and a memorable experience for all. I recommend a trip if you're able. Give yourself a full day to explore, at least.

Buon fortuna
