I will be attending college in DC and I just wanted to know:
What is the sales tax in Washington DC?
Are items such as food and clothing exempt from the tax? because in PA, we don't pay tax on food and clothing.
Any feedback would be great, Thanks.

The 'general' sales tax is 5.75%, liquor is 9%, restaurants and 10%, commercial parking lots charge 12%, hotels charge 14.5%...one of this highest in the nation! This does not include tax stamp fees which are already part of the sales price of alcohol and cigarette products.

There is a sales tax holiday in August where clothing, accessory items, and shoes costing $100 or less each are exempt from the 5.75% sales tax. According to bankrate.com, groceries are among the items exempt from the tax. The highest taxes are on eating out and parking, services usually taken advantage of by commuters.

I believe it's kinda high, like 7%. But it's lower in Maryland and Virginia - 5% in Maryland and it used to be 4.5% in Virginia. There IS tax on clothing and on restaurant meals, but no tax on groceries. (I'm from the MD suburbs originally and now live in Boston... and people make fun of our "high taxes" in Massachusetts but sales taxes here are kinda low).
