Largely by parenteral means. What I mean by this is IV drug abuse, inhaled drugs such as cocaine, blood transfusions (particularly if prior to 1990---now the blood supply is safe as we test it prior to giving it to you, but prior to 1990 we did not test it as HCV had not yet been discovered). HomemadeTattoos are a risk factor. If you use marijuana your risk of HCV is 50 times that of the general population. Not because marijuana transmits HCV, but because if you are willing to use marijuana, then you are probably willing to try a harder drug like cocaine or heroin.

It is not transmitted by eating or kissing or eating or using the bathroom after someone else. Current studies argue largely against sexual transmission. If it is transmitted sexually, it occurs only rarely. MOST people with HCV, if they are honest will admit that they have tried some illicit substance. Patients over 60 years old, probably did not do illicit drugs, they probably had a transfusion of some sort in their distant past.

If you will check the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) web page on HCV, you will find that if you have HCV then no sexual precautions are recommended, unless you have multiple sexual partners and if that is the case, the CDC is recommending condoms not for HCV, but rather to prevent the transmission of other diseases.

If you have HCV please seek the care of a specialist, called a hepatologist. Can look on the American assoiciation of Liver specialist web page (www.aasld.org).
