2 main things people are saying: diet and shampoo
1st off, oatmeal shampoo is the best by far. it really does wonders for the skin
2nd, look for a diet that does not contain WHEAT, CORN or SOY. These three fillers are the main culprits in giving your dog the "itchies." Cheap pet foods use these as fillers, so their cost of making the food goes down.
Ask yourself. If a dog is in the wild, would he raid a corn silo for food?
A good high-meat, no crap diet is Nature's Variety. I'm feeding their Lamb & Oatmeal (there's oatmeal again...) diet to my 14 year old Cockapoo, and she looks and acts like a dog half her age. I switched from Nutro about 6 months ago, and there was a HUGE improvement in her skin, and her overall health.
Go to www.naturesvariety.com and check them out. I'm sure they will hook you up with some free samples to try. It's not cheap, but it really is the best food out there by far.

I have a 5 year old blue doberman, she's had no issues with her coat or skin. She's very healthy and I get a lot of compliments on her. These are definately the best dogs in the world and make a great companion/guard dog. I know a lot of blue dobermans have skin/coat problems but not all blue dobermans have skin problems though. (Mine is evidence of this) You won't have any problems with a black doberman for the most part. It doesn't matter what color coat his parents were because as long as his is black he has the dominant color trait meaning the likelihood of skin/coat problems are very low. Again however blue or fawn dobermans don't necessarily have skin problems just because of their color but the risk for skin/coat problems are increased with those colors. Good luck by the way

There is a supplement that you can add to you dogs food. It is sold a pet stores. I'm not sure is a place like Walmart would carry it or not...The name of it is: Lina-tone and it is an oil. I used to give it to my German Shepherd years ago because she had a skin problem also. It made quite a change. Her skin was better and her coat shinny.

Definitely look at diet first. What are the fat levels in your dog food? Fat is important for good skin and a shiny coat. I use a high fat food. It is 20% fat.
Do not bath more than once a month. That can dry the skin out if you bath too often.

First re-evaluate the food you are feeding. That is often the culprit!!!!!! Consulting the vet is a good idea. They can advise on a food or any fatty acid supplements that may be needed. Shampoo only works on the surface, dry skin comes from indise the dog!!!
