Current members are going to run for re-election. My son doesn't have $1,500 to include candidate statement in mailings. Any advice for him to up his chances at votes? He is 21 years old and has never done anything like this before. Thanks for your help!

I've run political campaigns for decades. Here's the best advice...knock on every door three times.

Assuming you have a reasonably engaging personality, there is no more effective way of getting votes.

Get a list of registered voters. Make a schedule for canvassing each voter three times during the campaign period.

In the first round of visits you introduce yourself. Greet the voters by name. "Hi my name is ..... and I'm running for city council. I'd like to know what YOU think is the most important issue in this area." Then let them talk. Take notes. Look interested even if they are talking drivel. Say thank you and go on to the next voter. (If you find someone who is particularly enthusiastic then recruit them to help with the campaign.)

In the second round you return to see everyone you talked to the first time. From the list and notes you made the first time, address the issues they raised ("I've heard similar concerns about potholes/education/alien abductions from so many of our neighbors.). Recruit people to work the campaign. Carry applications for absentee ballots.

The last round is to get out the vote. If you've been even moderately successful you should have volunteers. Have them call or visit every voter who was favorable and remind them to get out and vote. Offer rides to the polls.

Another suggestion. bombard the local media with press releases and letters to the editor. Make of point of getting to know the local reporters. Come up with a theme that you can express in a few cogent phrases.

Best of luck. Seeking public office can be a thankless task. You are subject not only to barbs from your opponents but flak from those who while too lazy to actually change things are all too happy to slander those who try.
