I had a lot of trouble too when I went, so I rarely dove down. Mostly I floated on the surface, and just used the snorkel to beathe all the time. The best tip I got for the few times I did dive: remember to take a great big deep breath, dive, and when you come back the surface, pause a sec to make sure you're all the way up, and remember not just to exhale but to BLOW HARD to clear the water from the snorkel, especially from the J-bend next to your mouth where water will tend to collect.
Aside from that: wear sunblock, and be sure to put it on your back, neck and ears since that side of you will spend a lot of time facing up. TRUST me. Been there....
As for where to go: my favorite place to snorkel is at the Dry Tortugas National Park (yes, Tortugas, just like in the movie Pirates of the Carribean). You can take a catamaran out to the island (we did the Fast Cat), marvel at the thousands of hermit crabs (but don't take any, they're a protected species) and snorkel all the way around the island, especially in the old dock pilings where some really great coral growths can be found. Have fun!

I'm guessing you'll do the Hens and Chickens or Molasses Reef both great for snorkeling. Don't stand up on the coral reefs. Don't take memorabilia native to the environment. Don't go out if the weather is bad. A full body scuba suit isn't a bad idea it provides some just in case insurance. It doesn't hurt to look at pictures of aquatic life native to the area so you'll know what your looking at. Use a snorkel vest and invest in a water resistant camera, take pictures you won't regret it. Be careful what you touch but have fun. If you can do a night snorkeling session do it but do it safely. I'm sure you'll do fine practice in the tub are at the local pool. I think you'll enjoy it more if your able to dive in successfully and as always stay within the marked boundaries. One more thing practice with the snorkel and have it lean back and not forward not to far back but back. Get an idea in advance of how much effort it takes to expel the water. The scariest thing isn't the snorkel itself but you being a land animal out of your element in a whole new environment that's the fear factor element. Success is more psychological then mechanical. Learn the rules and discipline your thoughts you can do it. If you wear a long flowing white gown with your lovely blond locks down I'm sure that pirate fantasy you have might happen as I hear they like the woman in the virginal gown.

1. Wear something, a lycra full body suit to protect from sun burn and any possible jelly fish or coral stings.
2. adjust your snorkel so that it does not slant towards the front but slant towards your rear.
3. relax - breath comfortably - slow so you can fill the water in your snorkel. you can breath air around that little bit of water then blow hard to clear your snorkel. You shouldn't have to take your snorkel out of your mouth every time you dip your snorkel in the water when you look down. Stay calm enjoy getting WET

The mask is not tight enough. It is an easy adjustment to make. Say hello to Jimmy and the Parrot Heads for me. Watch out for the coral reefers.

Oh lucky you. I only snorkled once in the Bahamas....I loved it even though I was only paddling around on the surface. Have never been since and would love to try it again some time.
Hope you have a blast!
