Socrates once said that there are some things that should never be spoken. I agree. I hope some of you do also, not to stop good arguement, but to stop stupidity, which is increasing.

you do know that many here, have no intention of expanding their understanding?
many are just in it for the most important thing(tongue in cheek),points.
What a goal huh?
The points have no monetary value, yet people set up groups that manipulate this forum so as to get the most points.
If you are looking for intelligent interchanges, they are to be had. You just have to look past the fact that the majority of humans gave up thinking long ago. They are just on the earth to regurgitate whatever propaganda they were overtaken by at a previous time on their life.

Freedom of speech is the freedom to say absolutely everything, the important thing to remember is that the freedom must be total and that no one person, group or organisation must every have control over what is said.

Sometimes this may mean that you are hearing things that you would rather not, but that is the price of freedom. Just be sure that you are open to new ideas and viewpoints and that you're always willing to at least listen to someone else's views, even if they are completely different to yours.

Your statement is a little contradictory in this regard as you complain that humanity no longer thinks for itself at the same time as bemoaning the freedom to say anything you want. How are people expected to formulate new ideas if any form of creativity is stifled?Or should we just accept what we are told?

The real idiots in the world are those who don't accept others' points of view, the ones who do just speak gibberish and refuse to have their viewpoints swayed by logical debate. These are the ones on the rise and the ones who should be avoided.

Yeah, and Socrates didn't really write anything. How do you know that Plato didn't get that quotation wrong? Maybe he just twisted it around for his own purposes.

How would stupid people not talking decrease stupidity? The only way to make them smarter is to let them spew their stupidity then smack them across their heads with intelligence. Freedom of speech is for the stuff that you don't want to hear. Personally, I despise stupidity, but I'd rather know what the little cretins are thinking so I can refute it. Your argument is pretty lame. But you got to say it, now didn't you? See, YOU like freedom of speech. You'd hate it if you weren't allowed to speak out against stupidity and put in some obscure classical reference that you've taken out of context. Let's look at classical Greek society, for example. Pretty much all the writing was done by elite philosopher types or well-educated artists--where are the simple letters, or grocery lists, or ads? You get a totally skewed view of what their society was really like. Imagine what people would think of the US if they only read, say, newspapers, or minutes from Congress sessions. You have to let all people say whatever they want in order to truly represent a society.

Besides, among stupidity, my intelligence shines all the brighter.

Feeling a bit superior, are we. Free speech is just that. That people are free to speak what they wish. No police here to determine if what one says falls into the stupid category and forbid anything further being said, for then we wouldn't have free speech. Living in a democracy then you also have the right to form your opinion on what is said BUT not the right to impose on anyone else but again with free speech you certainly have the right to express it. I can just about guarantee that Socrates would also have said that if you believe your thoughts important enough to give voice then don't detract that importance by not spelling correctly

A wise American once said, "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." The way to fight lies and propoganda is with truth not suppression of free speech. And who should decide what should never be spoken? Will you decide? Our founding fathers gave us the credit of being able to distinguish stupidity from intelligent discussions. You're not from here, are you? Suppression of free speech does not change the mind and attitude of the speaker, just drives it underground. I think I myself once said something stupid. At least people laughed. If stupidity is a crime, I have a cousin who should get life.

Freedom of speech is a right, and like most rights there is a responsibility attached.
There are too many people that want to excercise the right as an absolute, and not bother with common decency.

By who you or us?
When you don't agree with something that is said then oh no that shouldn't be said. We have freedom of speech and we realize everyone on here is just giveing his own idea.
Maybe that isn't your idea and thats ok.
But we have a right to our own idea. I learned from my teacher
"When someone trys to silent you that means you hit a nerve and he thinks you have a good point but it is not what he believes so he tries to silent you. Don't ever let him do that"

Well, I completely support Freedom of Speech. I would rather they say the things that most think should not be spoken... sometimes it's needed... other times, it's just the red flag we need to ignore that person. ^_^

Its true that some things should not be spoken, but it is also important for us ALL to remember that it is not up to us as humans to begrudge others the right to use their free will to speak their minds. Unfortunately, some people speak when they should be listening.

dont think that there should be limits to speach-do think it would be better for some to remain quiet and thought a fool than for them to speak and remove all doubt-keep the peace old hippie here
