What is the perfect icing for cookies?

I need a perfect icing for cookies which holds color well. I hate royal icing because it is hard in consistency and hard to work with. Any other creamy color-accepting icings?

Egg Free Buttercream Cookie Icing
An easy to make egg-free frosting that works great for decorating cookies for holidays, birthdays and parties. You can make half the recipe if you like. 1/2 cup shortening
