Mr. Hatch's money from survivor was income (i.e. money he received in exchange for the service he provided of appearing on the show) and is taxable as ordinary income.
It was especially stupid of him to think he could hide this income from the IRS. I'm sure the program reported it to the IRS but even if they hadn't millions of people knew he got the money.
Income taxes and other taxes, such as sales taxes, are used to fund the activities of the governments that collect them ... the military, the police, firemen, roads, schools, etc. While it might be easy to take exception to the exact amount you have to pay in taxes or the nitty gritty details of how some of that is spent or how the tax burden is spread across society no one in his right mind could make the argument that the world would be a better place if there were no taxes.

The money Richard Hatch earned is considered income. You have to pay taxes on winnings such as winning the lottery, winning on a reality show as well as game shows. If you win a new car on The Price Is Right, you have to pay tax on that. It is just one way to share your winnings with others (the government).

Income taxes are taxes on money you made at work or money you won, like at a lottery or on a stupid reality show. You pay them, in theory, to pay for the running of the country by the government.
If you didn't pay taxes, you wouldn't have free public libraries or nice public parks to play in with your kids or dogs....or any number of things provided by the government...such as war making.
I think there should be more accountability on how our government spends our tax dollars.

Our government generates over a trillion tax dollars for a mutli trillion dollar economy. Imagine if these greedy bastards never taxed the max out of us. We'd have crappy highways, weak military, No satellite television (that would suck).
