That is a false analogy, for one. No one has ever or probably will ever claim that Webster's dictionary is a religious document, inherently making your observation false. Secondly, Christians are concerned for you soul (though not all are, admittedly) Yet I can find no atheists that care for my soul.

Technically, if you read the Webster's Dictionary long enough, you will eventually get the "Hell"...though you will get the "Hades" first, and, unlike the Bible, you'll go through "Heaven" before you go to "Hell."
If Christians are "Self-absorbed," they wouldn't care if you read the Bible or not. Instead, they are (or should be) more concerned about your eternal destination.
Why do Christians want you to read the Bible? Because it tells us where we came from, God's intention for us, the condition of our souls, our eternal destination, our need for a Savior, a choice to be made and the glorious hope that it provides.
It's a matter of belief. Until you believe that the Bible is true and that it is God's Word to a world that He created and loves, it will be nothing more than a book to you. But that book can provide answers for all of the questions you have in life and more.

Yes, the Websters Dictionary is a very good source of information. Yet, it is a reference book and usually only one deffinition is looked up at a time. Few people would read for pages.
There are several other good books.
But why is it so hard for people to read the Bible? Even the people suggesting that you should read it are partly doing it to encourage themselves. This is in spite of the fact that they have already found many wonderful truths in it. Still our human nature seems to rebel against the discipline that it takes to read the Bible.
Even if you do read the Bible faithfully, you may still go to hell. Many of the Pharisees in Jesus time thought they had it all figured out. Jesus called them white washed graves. They did not have a very good heart attitude.
It probably won't do you very much good to read the Bible like a dictionary, but anything is better than nothing. Have you ever read any biography's? We can learn from what happened to other people. The Bible is the book we can learn the best about Jesus. He tells many stories about rewards in heaven as well as punishments. Both you and I can learn from those stories and also from the life of Jesus.

If you worship the English language, then by all means, you should be proselytizing the Oxford Dictionary. Of course, English Language religion has no hell, so you can't condemn people with poor command of the language to live in Hell Michigan. However, Christians have a Hell, it's fairly well described in the Bible. It's even mentioned in the Dictionary! The road there is paved with pleasure. Enjoy the trip if you choose that for your destination.

thanks for making an extremely mandatory factor about "Christians" and such has been the historic reality because the "faith" began as first, the thoughts were transmitted orally, then they could purely be study by the few knowledgeable interior of monastic communities and under no circumstances all clergymen ought to study..., then the dedicated were instructed no longer study it as they could no longer interpret it wisely (which will were shown genuine by the very undeniable actuality that each and every week a clean, better interpretation comes out or one aimed in the route of a objective target market...) and the present cutting-edge day Christians have became the Bible into sound bytes and capture words, verse out of context, and so on. it will be thrilling to communicate about that many who declare to be Jewish can no longer study Hebrew and so that they might want to position self assurance in the translation and reading of others. This has also change into hardship-free position in Islam. almost all of Hindus can no longer study sanskrit and easily some Buddhist students can study the Pali Canon it is also written in sanskrit. this can prepare extremely thrilling... namaste

When you are having problems with your DVD player or your car, where is the first place you turn to find the answers or trouble shoot? It is the Owner's Manual, right? Well, true Christians see the value of reading the Bible. It is like an owner's manual to our lives. It helps us find satisfying answers to all sorts of life's problems. When I encourage people to read the Bible, it is because it really does have a lot of answers to our questions relating to daily life. Most people just don't want to take the time to find the treasures.

I am a Christian and I don't think I am self absorbed. I read dictionaries, too, but they won't get me into heaven. Christians just want others to realize that they have a soul and when you die, you will still be "alive". They don't want to see others perish because of their unbelief.

With your line of thinking, wouldn't everyone who tells us NOT to read the Bible be considered self-absorbed?

It's our job.
Your right, they won't.
Why are people in this section if they do not want to hear about the Bible? They could go to http://answers.yahoo.com/dir/;_ylt=ArNPtFKoDO81SduHVhRu4Hfzy6IX?link=list&sid=396545315
and ask or answer some questions.
