Poshest? Yes, you are from the Land of Eng, aren't you? Well, the least well-off states (i.e., the poorest) tend to be in the Deep South. Given the hammering Katrina did, Louisiana and Mississippi will be pretty bad right now, but the abject poverty is relative. We're not talking starving kids begging on streets here. Even the most crack-addled family will usually have cable TV.

The richest have to be Florida (no state income tax means a lot to those folks), California and New York given the population and concentration of businesses. Nevada the state that is booming though.

That's a tough one. It depends on your definition of posh. The South is very rural and is considered to have the largest percentage of poor, but it also has the oldest tradition of high society.

The North along the East Coast is considered to be the wealthiest, but the majority of people are actually very blue collar or city poor, and the people are considered brash and not very refined. They also sound quite brash and unrefined. Connecticuit would be an exception to this.

The West Coast is considered to be very New Agey. There are some very old rich over there, but most of the people who are rich are considered to be nouveau riche.

I would say that probably Virginia is the poshest state. It has very refined people and a long tradition of society. Next would probably be South Carolina.

However, if your description of posh includes a hip night life and high, popular fashion, then New York or California is your place.

The richest states are on the coasts; the poorest are between the coasts. The Deep South is pretty poor. The Desert Southwest is growing fast. The Northwest is a nice place to live if you like trees and mountains. The Northeast is full of liberals and the cost of living is very high. The Southeast is where all the New York and New Jersey libs go to retire. Lots of Hispanics there, too. You don't want to live there! The Midwest and Rust Belt is slowly sliding into the trashbarrel. The Southern Midwest (Texas) is an economic powerhouse. California is in the toilet because they have to support 4,000,000 illegal aliens, there is no money to keep the roads up because of them and taxes are a mega-ripoff there (again, because of all the welfare cases there). You don't want to live in California, either.

I live in Nevada, near Reno. I think this is the best place to live in the whole country. We have jobs coming out our clinton-hole here. I shoot long distance targets and there is no place like this anywhere! We have all kinds of outdoor recreational oportunities here. If you like to ride dirtbikes or ATVs, this is the place. If you like kayaking, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, shooting, biking, sailplaning, boating, waterskiing or just about anything fun to do outside, Nevada is it!! Nevada is 110,000 square miles of almost nothing. It's yours to discover...

It's not so much a certain state as it is an area of the state. Every state has a really nice area, usually a suburb of the state capital. For example, Buckhead, Georgia is a suburb of Atlanta (the capital). Homes costing in the millions of dollars. Same can be said for Grosse Point, Michigan (near Detroit, the capital). Columbus, the capital of Ohio, has some pretty nice areas...Upper Arlington, Bexley, etc.

I don't think there is ONE particular or specific state in America that is "posh". You could look in Beverly Hills, California---Palm Springs, but if you're just wanting status, you could move to Washington. I hear there's going to be a vacancy in the White House in the next couple of years.

Unfortunately, they've have some Texas white trash in there the last several years. You may need to re-decorate.

Poorest: Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa (agricultural and/or just not very populated)

Most every state has "posh" districts and "non-posh" districts (as you like to call it...) However, nothing could be quite as posh as being in England so just stay over there...we already have enough citizens over here preoccupied with socioeconomic status.

All of you Texas bashers come down to Houston and check out River Oaks or Champions.... All states have their nasty areas and their obscenely, ridiculously rich areas.

north eastern states (those damn colonies just kept up the facade of being fancy) and the west coast. stay away from the south, far away. they have long been known to make money vanish.
