It's expensive (I live in Toronto). With the GST, PST, and other taxes it all adds up. But since your not a Canadian citizen you can come shop here and then reclaim the GST by filling out an application (although I think you must have spent over $200 or something) Even though the American dollar is still stronger, the taxes would make up for it in the end equaling a similar price to what you would pay in the United States. I find things much cheaper in the states! I love shopping there, I got 2 Tommy Hilfiger shirts and a paid of jeans for only $123 US (that's good for Hilfiger). It was a big sale though, but I there are always sales at the stores in the US.
As for clothing stores, you will find mostly the same clothing stores as what you would find in the United States. You will also find many of the same restaurants. There is one Canadian store which is a hip hop type store, and very popular in the malls here. I think they only have like 3 stores in the states while there is like 70 across Canada. Anyways, it's called West 49 and you will find it in most major shopping malls. I personally don't like it though, my thing is Abercrombie or Hollister.

look at the rates for usa $ and cad $ at website below. taxes are on all usa states (bar a few) and also applies to your shopping in canada. In UK we have it added to the price already.. whereas there you will pick up your item and then have to add on tax gst/pst dependant on which part of canada you in.
i found shopping was just as cheap if not better, when last there..as i got 2 cad $ for £1 and i wasn't getting as much usa $ .. however people that travel to canada from america and vice versa..loose money in their dollar exchange.
Re hip hop .. sorry i don't know. best to check out area you are going to on the net.. and do a search on that town. have a nice time.

It used to be cheaper when the American dollar was strong....but now since Canadian dolllar has gained so much in the past little while, the deals are not as great as they used to be. BTW the taxes can be expensive. There is a G.S.T. ( goods and services tax which is 6%) and a provincial tax which varies from province to province ( although Alberta has no provincial sales tax). You can however keep your receipts and apply for a refund of the G.S.T. don't live in Canada)

Someone posted about about 8% and 15% taxes on stuff you buy.
I am Canadian.
In Ontario the combined PST (provincial sales tax) and GST (governmental sales tax) = 14%. So you spend $1.00 Can. It costs you $1.14.
Not everything has both taxes tho, like food from a supermarket wouldn't.
Clothes would have both.
