Hmmm, he might have a small problem in his brain function in his hearing section that might be making the noises louder than they really are and might be hurting his ears, that and old age.My austrailian sheperd Ginger has a tumor on her skull that has grown into the size of a baseball, and she hates the oven beeping, the microwave door being opened and closed, and also opening the fridge/freezer door.He might be develping a sickness in the brains hearing center making him hate the sounds, dogs have very good hearing and can hear radio waves we cant even hear so that might possibley the problem.Try asking the Vet to check the dogs brain with a scan to see if there's something wrong and to check his hearing with a test some vets do to check the hearing of dogs and cats to see if they are going deaf.hope you solve the problem!

For the dog, the sound could associate with a bad experience. In that case, your mother(or who ever witht he dog at the time) needs to act calm when the dog freaks out. Don't pacify him or pet him, it's going to make him think that there is really something wrong with the sound. The dog will calm down when he see his "pack leader" is calm, because he will think that "leader" gives the "ok" to the environment. If you know there's no history of bad experience associated with the sound, the fear might actually deal to a chemical inbalance in his brain. I know vet can give medicine to the dog if it gets out of hand(ex. he digs holes or run onto the street and no one can catch him.) It's like psy. medicine that human takes, it has side effect and such. I would only consider taking med when the dog is really hurting himself. However, med or no med, the problem should probably be addressed to the vet.

Our cat runs up stairs when the door bell rings. She is afraid of strangers. Animals are afraid of different things. Sometimes you can get them over their fear by soothing them when the sound occurs. You may have to get anti-depressants from the vet if the fear is to intense for you dog.

I also like running water, but, I love falling water, waterfalls, brooks with large stones. I live by the sea and I love to watch the tides going in and out over the shingle beach, makes a lovely sound.
