The age ranges between 12 and 16, depending on where you live. Make sure you check it out before you leave your children alone. Ignorance is not a good enough excuse to break the law.

I don't know, but generally people start at 13 or 14 depending on the amount of time and time of day/night the child will be left alone. Usually it's best to use a buddy system. If he/she has cousins or family members close in age with the same level of responsibility and you're only going out for a few hours why not make it a sleep over?

I know in CA the law is 12.
It definitely does depend on maturity. Some kids can call 911 and remember where they live and to stay on the phone. Some kids might just freeze up and forget to breath.
In any case maybe roll play a couple scenarios to see how they would respond. What do you do if a stranger comes to the door. What do you do if someone you know comes to the door. What do you do if you smell smoke? What about if the lights go out? What about if someone keeps calling and hanging up? Things like that.
When my folks left us alone for the weekend etc. Mom always left a binder by the kitchen phone. It had emergency keys. To the neighbor's house, to the rental house they owned, etc. $20 emergency money. All the emergency numbers, including Our Aunt who could handle everything even in the freak occurrence our parents died in a car crash etc. Plus the parents itinerary, hotel numbers. Everything we could possibly need in those plastic pocket pages in a binder.
Good Luck

Age 11 is a good age to leave them home by themselves. I have 4 children and 2 dogs and they don't have a problem while I am at work.

12 is the minimum age. However, 12 yr olds are different. Some 12 yr olds may need to be older if they aren't mature enough. Good Luck

For modern day kids? Just give them a computer loaded with games and they will happily spend all days there. Worried about Internet porn? Unhook the cables. Just let them play offline only. Of course, if they are smarter than you, then they probably know how to get back onto Internet anyways.

It really depends on how mature they are! If they know what to do incase of any kind of an emergency. And if she/he does then I would say around 10.
