I'm sick of using the plastic bag trick for cleaning up dog poop in the backyard, but am too cheap to shell out $35 for the 2 aluminum sheets stapled to wooden dowels that the pet store calls a pooper scooper. It is just poop--I don't need anything with a diamond-encrusted handle, just a simple shovel device that is cost-effective. Without buying aluminum and dowels myself, has anyone contrived a cheap alternative to the scandalous pet store scoops?

Scooping with a full-size shovel is worse than the bag trick. (Sure this may be a stupid question, but its Y!A)

My pup prefers to poop on the cement patio half the time and the bags tear when I clean it up with the bag trick. Not fun...

You could try either a small sand shovel, cat litter scoop or a dollar-store plastic salad tongs. These are all under $5, and if at a dollar store you should be able to try all three for $5. Or if you're handy-man savvy you could make your own pooper scooper with wooden dowels from the hardware section of Wal-mart or a hardware store, some staples and a few scraps of sheet metal. If you don't have the tools you can get places like Home Depot to cut the dowels and metal to size for you in the store. Then you need to get some small nails that can go through metal and a hammer and Voila! you made your own for half the price or less.
Another option is my mother's device: she cut the end off of a 2 litre milk carton, lined it with the bread bag and used the cut off part or a margarine lid to scrape the poop into the lined box. When done you tie the bag shut and throw away.

Lowes Pooper Scooper

This is what commercial poop scooping businesses like my Arrowhead Pooper Scoopers does: Home Depot, Loews or Amazon have a large, industrial size dust pan that is yellow or red in color that can be used with a small, 6 inch narrow garden rake. Place a 13 gallon trash bag inside the dust pan and wrap it around the outside of the pan, then sweep the dog or cat poop into the pan. When done, remove the bag from the pan, tie it off and discard. Simple, clean and no more poop. Hope that helps.

I don't know if this may be cheap to you but... for about $22.00 you can get the "POOP HOUND" made by www.hound-dog.com If you have a Home depot or a Lowe's home improvement near you that would be your cheapest place to get it. The site I gave you is way too much and the shipping is a joke.

I bought one of these 4 years ago, and it still works great. BUT I don't use the stupid little bags. I have three Labs, so I just attached (with screws) a detergent bottle to it (and dump it in a ground stool dropper).....Hope this helps...Good luck.
