Don't say, because the Bible says to. The Bible says not to eat pork, not to wear clothes of mixed cloths, not to shave, to keep the Sabbath on the SEVENTH DAY (Saturday), etc. And I don't know very many Christians that follow these. They say, "That was the Old Testament."
Guess what, tithing is in the Old Testament! The New Testament only talks about giving cheerfully. It never says to give one-tenth. Or to tithe. This is one of the very few commandments found in the Old Testament but not in the New that Christians follow. Why? Because religious leaders are all the same- power hungry and money hungry!!!

Don't shave: Leviticus 19:27
Don't eat pork (as well as shrimp and ham, etc.): Leviticus 11
Keep the Sabbath as the SEVENTH DAY: READ THE TEN COMMANDMENTS!!!
Wearing clothes of mixed materials: Deuteronomy 22:11 and Leviticus 19:19
~**~**~**
Please do not insult my knowledge of the "Holy" Bible. I wasted 18 years of my life following its out dated commandments and searching its antiquated pages for advice before realizing it was written BY MEN over TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO!!!

tithing is in the old testament and so are the ten commandments. you don't just pick and choose from the bible what you will follow.
There are some things in the old testament that were specifically for that time period - such as animal sacrifices to ask for forgiveness - in the new testament Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice and there was no more animal sacrifice.
give cheerfully - that is the answer to tithing - we are giving back not because we have to, but because we want to. not everyone gives 1/10. some give more and some give less, but God will honor a cheerful giver - one who gives from their heart - not one who gives because the bible tells them too!
people wonder why this world is going to hell in a hand basket - well it is because all we can do is think of ourselves. If we did more for others "cheerfully" than this world would be a better place. let's put need before greed and see what happens.

The church is a big machine, just like corporations, only the church gets an IRS tax-free status. The whole organization of Christianity (when adopted as the state religion of the Roman Empire under Emperor Constantine -- the first modern Catholic Pope) was based around conquering territory and hording wealth. The church has made quite a fortune over the years not only by taxing every member 10% of their gross income, but also through selling 'indulgences' (the religious equivalent of a "get out of jail free" card), by banning priests in the middle ages from marrying so that any children they produced would be unacknowledged bastard children (in order to keep the wealth within the church instead of inherited to their children), and by murdering and confiscating the wealth anyone with money (such as European Jews in the Middle Ages, and the Mayan Empire in the New World) who would not convert to Catholicism and give the church their money willingly. The church also has quite a money farm going by prohibiting contraception, thus encouraging exponential growth of the potential pool of tithers. Basically, it is not OK to prevent the creation of fetuses that might evnetually pay a tithe to the Church; however, once they are born, if they refuse to be Catholic and give their money to the church, they can be killed with complete moral absolution by the church. I wish I was evil enough to come up with a scheme like this -- I'd be rich, like the Pope! Let's just remember that Jesus was a homeless carpenter who wandered with no material possessions...

Luke 11;42, Jesus said we ought to tithe.
Hebrews 7;8, Jesus still receives tithes.
Say what you will, but the tenth belongs to God.
Tithing was in effect long before the 10 commandments,
Genesis 14;20 (when Abram tithed to Melchizedek), and
will probably be around for some time to come. If you
don't want to tithe don't do it. Your salvation is requisite on
nothing but the Blood of Jesus.
As for pork and other unclean food, the commandment was
rescinded in Acts 10;10.
I Corinthians 13;8a, Love never fails!!!!!
Edit: But if you do not tithe, you are still a God Robber!
Malachi 3;10, OT and NT.

One thing you forget is to actually read the Bible as you would see that Jesus revoked the Sabbath and Dietary laws because they were in preperation for His coming. Tithes are still good, the promise still stands that if you give a tenth with a good heart you will be blessed abundtantly.
(and non believers accuse the Christians of picking and choosing scripture without reading?)

As a Christian Pastor i will agree that there are many greedy people that fund a lavish lifestyle on the backs of those attending the Church.
However I must point out that Churches have expenses also.
Gas, electric, sewer and water plus the salaries of the Pastor and perhaps others depending on it's size.
naturally a Pastor is entitled to a living wage when he puts in 50 to 56 hours a week doing the work of the church.

The church has no source of income. Tithes and offerings are required to carry on the busuiness of the church. As far as pork, mixed cloth, shaving, and the sabbath-you are wrong. Read the Bible.

God owns everything.
Everything.
I thank Him with a tenth off the top.
It's a form of worship and thanksgiving.
I've done so for, virtually, my entire life and I've never missed a dime of it.
If you're staying away from a church experience because of this then I say go - but leave your wallet at home. Most churches have a contact card, or something like that, in the pew. Take one of those and put that in the plate when it comes around, if you feel the need - but keep your cash.
God doesn't need your money.
He wants a relationship with YOU - not your wallet.

Christians tithe because they're a bunch of followers who do whatever the money-grubbing pastors of the church say to do.
They think it's being good so they'll get into heaven.
Note: I think there are some genuine pastors out there who don't stick it to the congregations, but it's about keeping the church well-cared for so they can continue to give the message of whomever they say is giving the message. It's self-serving church rhetoric.
Someone below said god loves someone who gives cheerfully. So, reversing that and using your same logic, god hates people who don't give the money they worked hard to earn? The very money s/he needs to feed her/his children with? Not fabulous, people.

There's no god and religions are government programs that help keep the stupid peasents in line (scared). Now these programs cost money, or you think god provides for them? Are you stupid or something? Somebody has to pay and just like the Soviets who were chargind bad guys the cost of the bullet that will give their head one more opening so religions charges the suckers who listen. Or I'm wrong and god indeed needs ten percent of what we make...why not 37 percent? Or better yet, why not 666%? See that religons are legal scams?

Tithing is very misunderstood. Everything we have is God's. We are only asked to give back a small portion of what we have. And Jesus does make a point of being a cheerful giver. If it hurts you to give back to God's work that small portion then you are better off not giving. However, tithing is not only money. You also need to give a portion of your time, a portion of your talents, these things are needed to promote the furtherance of God's Kingdom.
