Some of these answers are right. It's probably his anal glands. They have these glands near the rectum that sometime get clogged, and they can also get infected. It's best to go to the vet to have them cleaned out or "expressed." They can teach you how to do it too if it happens really regularly. My dog has this problem (it's a fishy odor, right?) and the vet will express his anal glands every now and then. Good luck!

Smelly brown discharges from the rectal area are quite common amongst all mammals. If you housebreak the dog, then he will go outside to relieve himself of this substance instead of leaving it scattered throughout the house.

Why do you smell your dog's rectum? Take the dog to the vet and you need therapy.

It sounds like his anal glands. Is he scooting his behind on the floor? You should take him to the vet (he's probably due for his boosters anyway) and let them know what's going on.

Sounds like his anal glands, usually they get cleaned when they poop but sometimes not. If not, you may be to clean them yourself or have someone else do it. My cat is the same way. Oh he hates to have them cleaned.
