I too have a 17 month old baby, she never stops. But when we travel, we plan everything around her nap time. That will cut about 2 hours out. Bring candy...I am not one to give my daughter sweets, but special occasions like this is good. Big thing...new books and toys. Leap Frog has some really neat things he/she can keep entertained with. Bring your MP3 with headphones, not earplugs. Down load songs he likes...let him listen. One thing my lil one loves to do is play peekaboo. If you can get two aisle seats one behind the other. Mommy and Daddy can play peek a boo back and forth. He/She can also switch seats with either one of you, which may not seem like a lot, but being around different people around you helps. If you would like more tips email me. I would love to help you out!

If it's possible, cut their sleep time the night before so they will be tired and hopefully sleep most of the way. That might make them cranky before boarding, but better than then through the flight. You could try a lot of fun but tiring exercise with them before the flight too.
If they are awake, then walk the aisles with them to tire them out. Also feeding them turkey will make them sleepy.
Toys, books and games are good, but they probably won't keep them entertained the whole trip.
Good luck and have a happy trip!

We had the same problem, traveled from AZ to FLA. Alot of reading, coloring and snacks. We kept our grandbaby up till it was time to get on the plane, so she slept for 3 1/2 hours on the plane, that saved us.

It's gonna be a tough ride but, nevertheless, alter his sleeping hours so that they fall during flight time and if he's still wide awake then ask for the help of the stewardesses who are trained to handle kids.

I flew with my one year old to Europe - 12hrs w. one stop, really the portable DVD saved my life. But check w. the airline before, some of them don't alllow it. If yes, bring extra batery, got nowhere to plug it in.

if it were me, id ask pediatrician about allergy med. some make babies sleepy..and little ones do not understand how to pop their own ears.)the meds may thin mucus and help with ear-pressure)I've seen many an upset baby holding its head or ears while the mom tries to coax it to drink. (therefore popping the ears) if your baby uses a pacifier..give some meds before flight and let him suck on pacifier..this will probably help the ear-pressure pain..then he will be responsive to books or toys because his ears dont hurt ;-)

I am not sure but I suggest giving the rest of your section free drinks for the flight as it will tax their nerves as well
