WinRAR isn't free, it's shareware (so, is WinZip BTW). Instead, I recommend 7-Zip or PowerArchiver 2001 (the last version of it that was freeware before it became shareware as well).

My new computer came with winzip but there seems to be a size limit on the files--It opened a box and wanted a one-time payment of $29.95.

I went to PCWorld site and found Free Zip Program: QuickZip from Joseph Leung
http://www.quickzip.org/quickzip/downloads.php

QuickZip helps you shrink very large files or extract previously zipped files. It can extract 20 different types of archive files. The documentation is written in broken English but it's good enough to get you going.

Requirements: Windows 98, ME, NT, XP

Works great.

*IF* WinZip isn't opening .zip file, either you're doing something wrong, the zipped file is corrupt or it ISN'T a .zip file!

I suggest downloadinf Winzip and reinstall it, download the zipped file you're trying to open.....

WinRAR; winZIP. Winrar does what winzip does plus the higher-compression .rar file.

There realy isnt a "best" one cuz they they all do the same thing. I prefer the one that cam with windows. the Extraction Wizzard. All you have to do is right click on a .zip file and go to extract here.
