I am going to see my Portugeese relatives in a couple of weeks and would like to show a little respect and be able to communicate on a basic level.
I am a quarter Portugeese but have never been to Portugal.
Or if any Portugeese speaking people can spare any time that would be good too.

if you live close to London, I believe the Portuguese Consulate offers lessons. My nephew attends Portuguese classes.
I would volunteer to help, but I'm going away for 5 weeks. sorry.
Boa sorte.

I spent a month there 2 years ago. I speak Portuguese to my mother and English with my father. But am English... anyways I have some bad news. They don't speak English there. You would think that a Europeans would speak English but for some reason in Portugal they don't. I'd ask a strangers if they could speak English, they would say, "yes". Then I'd speak English and have a blank expression in return. It appears all they know how to say is "yes"
Oh and yes = Sim lesson Number 1 ;-)
Oh sorry its only true away from the Mediterranean coast. Along the Algarve most people in the service industry can speak a bit of English.
I'll be there in October / November this year too...
No = No :-) easy to remember...
