I have a 13 week old cockapoo and he HATES his crate and is hesitant to even go near it. Every time we put him in it he fights and whines when we leave. But when other people (other then me or my gf) put him in it he stays in it without a fight and never whines. How is the best way to get him used to it? How long does it usually take to train a puppy to learn his name, and basic commands?

Take and throw a treat into the crate so that he can follow it. Another way to get him to like his crate is to feed him in there. It shouldn't take more then a week to get him to learn his name, but it will take time to learn commands. The best thing that you could do would be to put him in puppy classes. The local obedience training center can help you with this. Good luck.

You are asking for a lot of information in this forum, so I would recommend a book on how to train your puppy.

Whatever you do, NEVER hit your dog! All you will end up doing is making the dog afraid of you and it will never train properly.

Remember you outweigh your dog by at least 20:1 if the puppy weighs 5 pounds and you weigh 100. It has a very small brain compared to yours and you are asking it to learn your language. Have patience, use lots of praise and repeat the lessons. That puppy looks at you as it's parent - the alpha dog of the pack - so however you train it, that's how it will be.

Good luck.

Sounds like you puppy it training you and your gf. He should know his name by now if you have had him for a few weeks. Basic commands will take time and patience. Firm loving voice for stay, sit. lay down, come, all mixed in with play and verbal rewards are good. He doesn't like the crate because he would rather play with you. He doesn't have a bond with other people so he doesn't care if they but him in the crate.

the more things are repeated to the dog the faster he learns it. and the creat thing , he is wishy washy b/c you and your gf are. you have to be SURE it is BEST for him and dont falter in your thoughts. and DONT let him out for whinning. this means whinning is the way out! "get it?" tv off, dog in creat, lights out, people gone. day over, sleep!dogs LOVE routine. stick to the plan. if the dog cries: light on , dog out to pee, back in creat , lite off. no talking. cept to say peepee outside? and BED! HAVE FUN. AND BE FIRM, YOU TELL HIM WHAT HE WANTS AND WHEN. YOUR THE MOM AND DAD.

Toss a treat into the cage and tell him to "Cage up" after a while he will learn that "Cage Up" means go into the cage and if you do something good will happen.
