If you want a little more on that, watch the first "Oh, God" movie where he plays a supermarket manager who has been chosen to deliver God's (played by George Burns) message.
John Denver's most controversial song is "Rocky Mountain High", used in the film Final Destination, which a Christian group claimed was about getting high (stoned) in the Rocky Mountains. He joined forces with Frank Zappa and other artists to protect music from censorship.
My faves are Thank God I'm a Country Boy, Perhaps Love, Country Roads, Annie's Song, Fly Away and Calypso.
I'm reluctant to call him either Christian or mystic, but he was a very talented artist. If you find his music inspirational, I would imagine he would be very pleased with that!

John Denver was NOT a mystic. He was a songwriter and singer. That's it. Get real.

John Denver saw the beauty in things around him. He felt the passion of life. He was a very talented man.

I think so. Just take the following example:
Well I got me a fine wife,
I got me a fiddle.
Sun's comin' up,
I got cakes on the griddle.
Life ain't nothin' but a funny, funny riddle.
Thank God I'm a country boy.
That sounds very Taoist to me. Or yes, quite mystic.

could be.
Or he was just very thoughtful and considered the viewpoints and lives of others outside of himself. If that's a mystic, we need more of people like him.

Actually, with Denver's love and celebration of nature, I always thought of him as a pagan poet.
"And oh, I love the life around me,
I feel a part of everything I see!
And oh, I love the life within me,
a part of everything is here in me!"
Perfectly open, beautifully simple.
His lyrics are often congruent to Buddhism, as well.

He MIGHT have been a MYSTIC-- but I always thought of him as a tree hugging NEW AGE devote.
