Light is required for photosynthesis to occur. If you suddenly shut the lights out on a plant however, some of the chemical reactions that had been energized by the light would complete their course and fix CO2 to some type of sugar or carb.

Photosynthesis will slow until all available sugars are consumed and turned into energy then the plant will begin to "die back" leaving only what it needs to regenerate. It only takes one cell to regenerate an entire plant (with optimun conditions)
