How do I scale someting in the y direction but not in the x direction?

The only way I know to do that is to use the stretch command.

Make a Block of your object. Then Insert the block but before picking the insertion point, enter 'Y', then enter your y-scale factor. Explode the block after insertion. (I think you can enter the scale information in the Insert dialog box...I'm just used to typing commands.)

Voila, y-scaled.

if it is like the autocad i have, you just have to make sure the lock icon is unlocked up in the toolbar
