In a full (10-handed game) AA will win 31.06% of the time if you were playing showdown poker where everyone stayed till the end. That's the best you're going to get.

Regarding what Dylan said, there isn't a single pro that wouldn't trade whatever two cards he was dealt pre-flop for two aces. While it is true that the flop might bring anything - the 'anything' they bring goes favorably with AA more than it goes favorably with anything else.

While AA remains the best starting hand regardless of how many people are playing (2-10), other hands do not hold their position in the heirarchy of hands. For instance, one of the answerers told you that 72 off suit was the best hand. He was joking because of the 169 possible two card combinations - 72 offsuit is the worst (in a 10-handed game) winning a paltry 4.90%. However, in heads up play, while AA remains the #1 hand - 72 actually moves up from 169th position to 164th position. Nothing to write home about but interesting nonetheless.

Pair of Aces are definitly not the best starting hand, in fact it be one of the worst. Many pros do not like that hand because the chances of getting connector cards aren't that great. There really is no best hand because the center cards aren't set in stone, so any two cards can either be the best or worst depending on the cards.

AA is the only answer....anybody who says anything different is either joking around or doesn't understand the game. If you were able to get AA dealt every time you played Hold 'em (and, assuming that you were able to play against people who somehow didn't notice) - you would become very, very rich in the long run. (actually - even if your opponents DID notice - there wouldn't be too much they could do about it...although they'd probably stop playing against you pretty quickly)

The best starting hand is the one that wins in the end. I've seen AA cracked too many times to think it's fool proof...they're good about 33% of the time, believe it or not.
