I cured my severe anemia (I literally had zero iron in my body) by taking Chromogen Forte which was prescribed by my nurse practioner. Chromogen Forte consists of ferrous fumarate + Vitamin B12 + folate acid + Vitamin C. Since my iron levels have stabilized, I now take less iron by using Vitron-C and B vitamins. If Chromogen Forte or Vitron-C are not available, try getting iron supplements with ferrous fumerate. This type of iron is much better absorbed by the body. Taking orange juice (or another type of citrus juice) which has a lot of vitamin C will help your body absorb the iron.
The best diet for anemia is eating red meat at least two times a week. Mussels and clams are also high in iron. Make sure you eat a lot of vegetables (especally salads!) to get your B-vitamins. I would also like to note that when I took ferrous sulfate, my anemia only improved gradually. It was only until I started taking ferrous fumerate that I started getting better. Also, since I stopped being anemic, my period has returned to normal.

Ferrous Sulfate/ Iron tablets usually the Dr will prescribe 325 mg a day. Make sure that you take it with food, it can cause nausea and it can make your stools dark. Consult a Dr before adding in any medications, especially over the counter vitamins. Many vitamins/ minerals can cause an increased in bleeding times, such as co q 10, glucosamine, ginko balboa, etc... Take a list of everything that you are taking to your Dr, they may be able to find out what is causing your anemia.

ferrous sulfate (iron) is your best bet. take it with food as it may make you nauseous. also, it is a good idea to take it with a glass of orange juice because vitamin C (in orange juice) helps the body to absorb the iron better. otherwise, the body has a bit of a difficult time absorbing the iron on its own.
foods you can eat that are high in iron include any red meat, spinach, liver (organ meat), and beans.
