Needed a dog that requires a little exercise, doesn't eat much, and isn't too big, (not including Chihuahua).

Definetly a pug!!!. I have teenagers and a pug and it works out very well. Pugs are little dogs with a big dog personality. You can roughhouse with them and they actually like it. You just have to understand that they snore and make all sorts of pug noises. They also don't do real well in extreme heat so they can't be left outside in the summertime.

They also like to sit on your lap any chance they get.

First off, I would NOT reccomend any sort of terrier (with the one exception of a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, which may be too big for your purposes). Terriers need a LOT of exercise and attention, or else they can be very destructive.

For a small dog that still has a lot of personality, check out a pug. If you don't find those attractive, perhaps a Bichon Frise. The trouble with many small dogs is that they can be nervous and needy if not properly socialized. For a little more help, use the Purina breed selector (the first link below) and DogBreedInfo.com (the second link below).

A poodle or a pom-a-poo is a great pick. Get one that is a puppy so that you can help develop the personality. They can get ample exercise indoors if need be; they don't eat much; and they don't get very big. PLUS (which is a very, very big plus) they do NOT shed and don't require a lot of daily grooming (I keep her real, real short - almost to the skin on her body - during the summer months). I had a poodle for years and now have had my pom-a-poo for 5 years (seems the not full blooded poodle is the smartest pet I've ever had and is so adaptable and playful - yet protective of our family). My pom-a-poo was easily paper trained (puppy pads from pet store) and has done nothing but that for almost the full time - I recently moved to more secluded area and we're trying to learn to go outside now.

The West Highland Terrier is a great small dog, in fact the American Kennel Club describse them as having no negative characteristics. They have short hair, and do not shed (although they are not in the toy category).

Some people have suggested Jack Russell Terriers--they are extremely high energy and you need A LOT of time to devote to training.

A cairn terrier might be a good option. Others: mini schnauzer, min pin, papillon, french bulldog.

Good luck. Do lots of research!

Jack Russel Terrier - these dogs have so much energy - your teenagers can really be a big part of caretaking and training.

How about a Jack Russell Terrier (dog on Frasier). They can be a little energetic, but they are cute, very smart and need very little grooming.
