A North Carolina judge dismissed the charges against a drunk driver charge because of a Spanish language barrier that prevented him from understanding the law. Do you think this is right?

Which question are you asking?

Do I think you should have to pass an English test to get your driver's license? Yes; I haven't seen too many multilingual road signs lately, and soon American citizens (even legal immigrants) will get fed up with their tax dollars having to go to pay for signs and communications in more than one language.

Do I think drunk driving charges should have been dismissed for the reasons the NC judge gave? No; I'd think weaving in and out of traffic would have been a clear sign that you're too drunk to drive in any language. But just what was the law that the driver was claimed to not have understood -- was it about blood alcohol level, was it about open containers, was it even explained to the defendant? Why I did not become a lawyer . . .

A judge threw out a DUI because the guy couldn't read the driver's license manual?

I am speechless. I have no good answer to this. Someone grab a spatula to pry me off the floor.

I used to think people living in bomb shelters were kooks. Now I'm not so certain...

In Oregon, the driver's manual are in Spanish. Of course, so are all the signs and all the worker at the DMV are bilingual.

It's because Oregon is part of Aztlan... yeah, right...

And I thought it couldn't get worse....that judge should lose his seat. I'm tired of these judges with their private agendas and making the public pay for their rulings (choices). Usually a drunk driver will drive drunk again and again. This person that got off will probably kill someone one day, and this judge will make the news and the public will be outraged cause the judge didn't do his job!!! (history really does repeat itself huh?)

And to answer your question, if your trying to get a license in America you need to know the language which is ENGLISH!!!! How can you get one without passing the written part????
The person should have went to jail....and if he does kill someone I would like to see that judge in jail too.

Since when is ignorance of the law a valid excuse to break it? I wonder how this judge will feel when one of these people he excused kills or seriously injures someone he cares about. And yes I do think you should have to know English to get a driver's license. What do people think, that we should have to put up signs in both languages? That wouldn't cost a bundle, would it?!

The signs are in English! The test is in English! If IT could not understand the law...It could not have passed the license test and was therefore driving illegally. How many crimes do these invaders have to commit before America stops the invasion?

I do not believe we should have to print drivers licenses booklets(test), voting ballets, etc...in any language but...English.

I personally think that letting a drunk driver off the hook, because of a so called language barrier...is just disgusting. ( in most states..there are bilingual state troopers, deputy sheriffs,etc...and of course in many cases defendants are afforded court appointed attorneys..who are bilingual.

I am sorry to say it, but, it seems as though the horse is already out of the corral, and we will probably just have to deal with the situation, as best we can.

IF you can't read english how are you going to understand the signs . the judge was wrong on dismissing the charge cause the guy should have known better not to drink and drive in the first place...

Yes, an English test is a good idea!! I am Hispanic and so is a lot of my family, but they learned English when they moved here from Mexico. We live in the America where English is the primary language. I think you should learn it or leave. I don't go to Zimbabwe and expect everyone to know what I am saying in English.

So I can go to another country and break their laws because I don't know the language??

Yes there should - They need to be able to read the street signs (Stop, Yield, etc.), and they should take the test itself in english. People should not be let out of responsibility for not knowing the language. If they don't know and break a law, tough!

The ROADSIGNS Are In English

YES .... Vocational English
That Means READ And WRITE

I Also Think That An Individual Should Provide PROOF
That He/She Is NOT An ILLEGAL ALIEN
Before They Get A Driving License

ILLEGAL ALIENS Should NOT Have Driving Priveleges
