I asked a few questions about if I, an atheist, could feel Love for Huminaty in general and for my girlfriend in particular.

A few answers i got said this:

"Christ died for our sins, and that took a great deal of love. you may like your g/f, but you can't love her unless you are saved"

"You can truly love even without Jesus in your heart -- but not to the extent to which you were speaking in your first question, when you wrote about having a huge amount of love for humanity in general. That's Christ-like love. It can only come from Christ"

is this:
a) sarcasm
b) arrogance

Please tell me that Christians use sarcasm in their way of communication, else I truly will never understand it.

I agree with the people who have answered 'C. ignorance'.

From my time on Y!A, it seems clear to me that a lot of people divide the world into two groups:

1. Christian.
2. The scum of the earth.

A lot of people here define everything good as Christian in nature and, by default, understand anything not Christian to be evil, inadequate and wrong-headed. The question is how they have come to believe such a clearly preposterous thing - and I believe it's sheer propaganda and provincialism in place of a true education and experience with the variety of people on this earth. We have a real opportunity here on Y!A to demonstrate to these people that "Christian=good, Everything else=bad" is a completely faulty syllogism. If we can do anything at all to help a poorly-educated Christian bigot remove his/her blinkers, we will have truly shown the love for humanity that these answerers deny we can feel.

Actually, there is a lot of truth in the second comment (the answer you listed concerning Christ-like love).
English has only one word for love, but we know it can have different meanings.

And no, I don't think that sarcasm was involved. As an atheist you are refusing to digest and understand certain aspects of the world which is limiting your understanding.

It would be like looking at the world, seeing color, but not being able to appreciate it.

But the real question is are you even serious in asking or are you trying to be sarcastic yourself?

Ugggh. Unfortunately I have to go with answer B! I wish it were sarcasm...But if you want to find some good Christian satire check out landoverbaptist.org, also thedoor.com. Just to let you know such a thing does exist, and some Christians can recognize their own absurdities!

It's arrogance tinged with fear. They are arrogant to say they are the only ones who can truly feel love. They are fearful because if anyone can love, with or without Jesus, then what is the purpose of their religion? Their answers said that not only could Atheists not truly love, but that people of other faiths could not truly love.

Well that is the same all around as I see a lack of unsarcastic non believers. Sarcasm is part of human nature, it is not a Biblical teaching or religious doctrine. Some people are just sarcastic period.

I am a Christian, and I say that those kinds of replies are arrogance, not sarcasm.

They are also very ignorant.

But please don't judge Christians too harshly. It is a very centered religion, and one of the most important aspects of it is that the person must have faith... believe completely... put total trust in their faith.

They often don't understand that all religions believe their own to be the truth. Otherwise.... why believe it or practice it?

Hard to say since it is an e-mail (you do not get the person's tone of voice nor the facial expressions).

I'm a Christian, but I cannot answer for other people (no more that you can answer for all atheists). I suggest that you ask the person who said it.

Otherwise, who knows?

I would say

3. Reckless Zeal They want you to know about Christ and the Bible, which is a good thing, but they are mistaken in believing you will come closer to either by being insulted.

I don't think they get sarcasm. Every time I ask a sarcastic question, they give me serious answers and scripture quotes. I'd go with b).

I don't think that is sarcasm or arrogance... i think it is simply the utter, abysmal cluelessness that is to be expected from someone who has been thoroughly brainwashed, and for whom reason and critical thought are alien concepts.
