I believe that praying to God works. I have asked for many things that I got. I am very thankful for everything that i have asked for or not. But one thing that comes to mind is, there was this exam that I took and i just did some selective studying for it, for some reasons i didn't have the time and I prayed for it to go good which was a little more than a miracle!!! But believe it or NOT, I knew answers to almost all questions! It seemed like the questions were prepared keeping in mind what I know!
I believe, Every prayer is answered, some times it just takes time, AND if it's not, then i believe that there was something that wasn't right and so i am saved:-) I am a firm believer in whatever happens, happens for the good:-)

Define "works" for this question.
Do I pray? Yes.
Does prayer allow me time to relax and focus on what I believe and have faith in? Yes.
Does prayer give me time to myself for personal reflection? Yes.
So for me,prayer does work.
I have wished for a lot of things, but that is not the same thing as praying for something. I prayed for good grades in high school, especially when I was not ready for a test, or did not do all my homework, etc. Did I get good grades sometimes? Yes. Did God answer that prayer? I don't think so. I think I just got lucky and the teacher was having an off day.
My question is, why does it matter if I believe in prayer? If you don't, that is fine. Don't pray. But to ridicule people for something like that is not right, just because you do not believe it. And when I say you, I do not mean you specifically, I mean generally anyone who does not believe in prayer.
And sometimes, you may see a prayer as having gone unanwered, but thay in fact be an answer.

i believe any prayer works .. you can pray to scooby doo ( couldn't think of anything else there lol ) if you like because the power of prayer or to be more specific , the power of thought is amazing
if our intention is good and our thoughts are directed then our thoughts become actions
i am saying this though as someone who believes in god so my thoughts are directed there
but never underestimate the power of thought
i have had one prayer answered that will always be special to me though
my dad was dying of cancer and after 2 years of praying for him to be well ( he had a great 2 years so something was working )
we noticed dad just gradually getting worse
so one night me , my mum and sister without realising we all were doing same thing , prayed that dad be taken peacefully
2 nights later dad died with a smile on his face from heart failure totally unrelated and unexpected even to the doctors

I know that prayer works, it has worked for me on many occasions. The biggest thing was my daughter, after almost 10 years of infertility and three miscarraiges and the doctors telling me I would probably never conceive and definately not without medical intervention, I prayed and prayed, got my life right with god and God blessed me with my beautiful and healthy child. God works miracles.

I struggle a lot with believing in God, but I am comfortable with everything happening with a cause and purpose. When I was a child, I lived in an abusive environment (nosebleeds, beatings, hair-pulling, head banged against the wall etc. etc). I lived in fear. I was really afraid of dying. I prayed so hard for God to save me. I remember those nights. I think I was begging more than praying, though. I was suicidal at age 8, and I cried alone at night, thinking that if there was a God, then surely he would save me. Nothing ever happened. My desperate prayer wasn't answered. However, I am now a junior psychology major, planning to go to graduate school in community psychology. I want to help abused and at-risk children through research, prevention and treatment programs. I think my experience has helped me a lot. I guess there is a reason for everything. God does what He does because of His knowledge...not because someone "wants" something. I have the empathy that I think will motivate me. It's an issue very close to home, and truly care about. I would never have felt this strong if I had not gone through it myself. It was horrible at the time, but now I can see why it happened.
Sometimes I question God (more than I'd like to admit), but not because he doesn't answer my prayers. I started praying when i was young, even though I'd never stepped food in a church. I had heard about God mostly through friends, and I knew about Him. It wasn't much, but I knew people prayed when they were scared, lonely or hurt. I used to pray for God to change things in my life, but I don't think that's the right thing to pray for.
But now I pray to God, asking him for help in opening up my heart, and helping me accept Jesus Christ as my Savior and realize that He is there. But on a whole, I don't think prayers work. I think that if God is real, He will do what he believes is right, and allow what He plans to happen. Someone praying won't change His mind. Praying for strength to follow His plan, however, is a different kind of prayer. We work for God. God isn't a a wishing star. If you pray for a new puppy, for instance...it probably won't help.
Think about it. During wars, one side prays to God to win. The other side does the same thing. What decides the victory? Who prays harder? No. God will let whatever He planned to happen. A few angry soldiers praying to win won't change a thing.
Even in cases of illness, I don't think it changes. I think he already knows what will happen. Praying just reassures God that you have Him in your heart and believe and trust Him. You should pray for strength and faith, and for you to accept what happens. God gave us free will, and you can affect your life. You can make decisions to change your life. Some things can't be controlled, but those things are in God's hands. I guess you need to trust that you will not doubt what happens.
I wouldn't lose my trust in God because of a prayer not being answered. My biggest barrier is getting past the scientific logic. It still boggles my mind, and I just think too much. God is a good thing to have in life, I think...don't lose Him. I'm in the middle of the road, and it's a scary place to be. Keep holding on to your faith.
Take care, and I hope everything works out for the best.

I do not believe, I know. I have seen the proof. If you have faith in God and pray for anything according to his will, you will recieve it. (The thing that most people miss is that their will and God's will aren't necessarily the same.) Even if you don't know what God's will is, it doesn't hurt to ask, the worst he will do is say no.
Miracles I have witnessed:
I have seen the healing of Cancer, MS, Injuries, Minor ailments. I have seen lost/stolen objects returned, wallets, batteries, etc. I have seen people brought to faith. I have seen money raised. I see miracles every day, though they are usually small ones.

praying isn't the same as wishing. God's not some kind of fairy Godmother. You can't really explain it to someone who doesn't know Him. He is our Heavely Father and we have a relationship with Him. You ask according to His will. Lots of times I have caught myself asking for things that weren't really important, and when you get in the habit, you start talking to Him about everything. Thank Goodness He is patient and loving.

The thing about prayer is that it is a tool that is designed to get you closer to God, not to get you what you want. God already knows what you want, he knows your heart and could give you everything right now. But what He wants is a relationship with you. Prayer brings you to him, if it is His will, he will grant your prayer. But if we ask for something that is not right for us, he may not give it to you. That is your answer.
My experience: When I was in a very hard 4-year relationship (not married) with a man who was verbally abusive and not supportive of my walk with the Lord, I prayed daily for the strength to get out because I realized what I had gotten myself into. The Lord provided me a way to get out. He knew that I was unhappy and He wanted more for me. When I was out and safe, I prayed that if it was His will that I be alone, that I knew he would give me the strength to do so, but that I really wanted to find someone who was with me in my walk with Him and who would support me and also walk with Him. My prayer was answered less than 2 months later. I met my husband and we couldn't be better matched. He is my best friend and a wonderful man. I believe God had to show me that I couldn't do it on my own and that my previous walk was not what He wanted for me.

More things are wrought through prayer than this world dreams of.
I could write many books on the answers to my prayers. God is faithful, and He may not always answer them the way which I want them to be answered, but He answers them in the way which is best for me.
Some have been prayers for employment, provision, healing, and guidance.
