1) buy a sketchbook (Michaels, Aaron Brothers, any art store).
2) choose a subject to draw
3) draw it
4) get feedback from a teacher, artist, or one who is both.
5) Follow the feedback and repeat steps. Do it EVERY day.
Good luck, picasso.

The best way to start to learn how to draw on your own is to buy some tracing paper and start tracing pictures over and over and eventually your eye will see what it needs to replicate certain techniques in drawing. As far as painging goes, if you have never done it before then I would suggest starting with a One Stroke Painting kit by Donna Dewberry which can be found at your local craft store or online. Even though it is decorative painting it will get you started in technique with a step by step process that will overflow into regular painting. This kit will also get your eye in the right direction on shading and many other painting techniques without investing a lot of money. Just remember that you are just starting and it will take awhile to get 'great' but just have fun with it. Art doesn't have to be gallery ready it just has to feed YOUR soul.

Ok you want to draw?
Get paper...lots of it. go to a paper merchant and explain you need to buy cheap paper.
Dont buy anything less than 135gsm.
1000 sra2 should cost around £50
You will never have to buy paper again.
Now then. Draw. Look and draw. The more you draw the more you will see. look and see how an eye looks. A tree. A nose. look at colour and be dazzled by it.
when you get stuck go to exhibitions and museums and see how they solved the same problems that you are trying to solve.
It is a great journey but it needs a bit of devotion.
The reason you need to buy so much paper is because you dont want to think of it as precious.
When you draw and paint it should be both an examination and an expression of yourself. But that wont happen until you do one minute drawings that are both spontanious and twenty hour drawings that have that same spontiniety.
Now anyone can trace. And if you want to trace fine. But you wont be learning anything.
The only way to approach this is with passion.
Good luck!

I would say to buy a pencil and a paint brush with some paints from WH Smith and then just follow those numbers starting at 1, u are welcome to come and paint my house to get the wrist action going, mmm then maybe some local art classes at your local college in the local area locally, catching a local bus to get there, try and paint a nude cos it's a bit of a laugh when they look floppy, try to look serious at all times then start wearing a funny big hat to show how sophisticated u are and then if u get fed up drink some wine but do not cut off ear as u may get infections.

It's a good idea to carry a sketchbook around with you.Something that fits easily into a pocket or bag.Get into the habit of doing quick sketches of anything that appeals to you.If you're on the train or bus you can spend some time doodling. It can be a place to put pictures cut from magazines and postcards.Things that have nice colour schemes.Make notes of the ramdom ideas that float through your brain as you day dream. As it fills you will have something to refer to as a starting point for paintings .The main thing is to draw often even if it's only for a short time.....and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty!

Buy books, supplies, and then just start practicing. I'm not really fond of painting so I can't help you there. Take a couple art classes and then view others drawings, maybe you can spark some inspiration from it, and just go from there.

The Joy of Painting TV shows are pretty good and you may find the kits at places like Michael's, Joan's Fabrics and Pearl Paints.
I believe that the shows are still aired through PBS.
Good Luck, God Speed!
