The actual pregnancy gestation is 36 - 42 weeks. 42 weeks is 10 weeks short of a year - ten weeks is roughly two months, therefore pregancies can be ten months.
The due date is taken from your last period and you will have concieved sometime during that month - no-one can be exact unless they very rarely had sex or they got pregnant the one & only time they had sex.
Does that make sense? It's one of those answers where you need to look at it & work it our for yourself before the penny drops.
Hope that helps. :-)

Your doctor means 10 pregnancy months. A pregnancy month is 4 weeks/28 days. Since there are 40 weeks in a pregnancy you are pregnant for 10 months. However in calender months this comes to 9.5 months, and the first 2 weeks you aren't even pregnant. They count from the first day of your last period, so the first week you are on your period, and the 2nd week is the week before you ovulate, so in fact you are really only pregnant 9 calender months.

A normal pregnancy is 40 weeks.
40 divided by 4.3 = 9.3 months... (an average month has 4 1/3 weeks in it)
So some people say "9 months" generically because many women will deliver 2 weeks early, which is still considered normal.
Besides, I think saying that pregnancy lasts 10 months would scare future mom's a bit more. :)

40 weeks does not equal 10 months. There are often more than 28 days (4 weeks) in a month. so 9 months can be 40 weeks total. But some people think of a month as being 4 weeks and therfore 40 weeks would equals 10 months in those peoples minds.
Wait I confused myself...

Normal pregnancy is 38-40 weeks which is not 9 months.
I have no idea why everyone says 9 months either.

Im not sure but I think it is because 40 weeks is over 9 months and when your past the 9 month mark your considered to be going into the 10 month. just like when you when your 9 weeks pregnant your 2 months and 1 week but your considered going into your 3rd month

Because its more accurate to work in 4-weekly months rather than calendar months coz calendar month lengths vary. They say the average pregnancy is 40 weeks (though actually its only 38 coz they count from your last period not conception) and 40 divided by 4 = 10 months.
However none of it matters coz your baby will come when he/she is good and ready! I was pregnant for 10 3/4 months before my baby was forced out by the stupid docs who made things v complicated (shoulda trusted my baby to come when she was ready) and my step-grandmother was pregnant for 13 months!!! They obviously weren't as interfering back then!!!

doctors use a 4 week month and not a calendar month and there is 40 weeks in most pregnancies so adds up to 10 months.

Becasue it is 9. If you divide 40 wks by 4 you get ten. But remember there are more than just 4 wks in some months.

It is a combination of the fact that they are using a 4 week schedule and the fact that they consider the first day of your pregnancy to be the first day of your last menstrual period. Meaning you don't even concieve for about another two weeks!
So you are 'two weeks' pregnant at conception, and the few extra days of our uneven months equals the discrepency.

A typical pregnancy lasts 40 weeks, which is 280 days. Nine months is about 270 days, whereas ten months is approximately 300 days. Therefore, nine months is closer to the 280 days than ten months is.
It is easier to term your baby in weeks than it is in months. You'll find most baby information guaged in weeks rather than months.
