Most employment contracts in Mom-and-Pop shops are "Employment
at Will". That is, the employment continues until one side or the other
doesn't want it to be true any more.

If she believes that you need a certain uniform for her business, than
that is her perogative as the store owner. You don't have to work there.
Consider the uniforms that Burger King and McDonalds make you wear.

Now, there are a variety of laws that come in to play with extraordinary
behavior when "Employment at will" is in place. For instance,
discrimination, dangerous working environment, sexual harassment, etc
all potentially may govern the situation.

However, a non-obsene uniform isn't going to fall into any of those.

That this uniform is expensive isn't really an issue either. The
employee does not have to work there.

It is an employers choice if they want to have their employees where something specific. My husband has to wear a uniform to work. When he worked at a local store he had to wear black pants and shoes along with a store shirt. He had to buy everything. Many places have this policy, not just Orthodox Jews. If people don't want to have to wear dresses then they shouldn't work in a place that makes them wear them.

An employer can have a dress code if they choose to have one.

You can choose if you work there or not, they certainly cannot force you to work there.

Employers such as HOOTers require a skimpy uniform and thick panty hose, still an expense for the employees, but yet they choose to work there and comply to the dress code.

My work requires steel toed boots, I can choose not to wear them, but face losing my job if I do not.

Its not a matter of religion or worship, it is the choise of the employer. If you feel strongly against wearing a skirt and panty hose, find another place to apply for a job at where this dress code is not required.

I find it odd that a woman would not own a skirt. Strange sign of our times. As to the store if the owner requires it it is her choice. I work in a nursing home and I am required to wear a nursing uniform and I must provide this myself.By the way I only dress in skirts and dresses.I embrace my femininity.
Peace Be With You,
Debra

I don't think its fair to stop shopping with a retailer just because they have a dress code for their employees. There are many businesses where the employees have to wear uniforms and they only have two or maybe three changes of uniforms. Can someone drop out of school just because they have a dress code? Maybe your issue is really with the employee and not just about what you have to wear.

Store owners are allowed to have a dress code for their employees, whether the employees like it or not. Even if they don't agree with the reasoning behind the dress code.

all kinds of places have dress codes... my office you have to wear slacks and a shirt with a collar, I hate wearing slacks because I am so tall they are hard to find in my size.... but if I want to work here I have to buy them anyway. Usually mine turn out to be kind of expensive to because they are a tall size, and not just everyone carries tall.
If they don't wanna wear a skirt.... get a job somewhere else...ghessh

They could always work somewhere else. If the lady is the owner, and she has a dress code, and the employees know it what is the problem? How does it affect you?

There is a chain of BARS that is called HOOTERS.
The waitresses wear almost NOTHING!

The girls get paid very well AND keep all of the tips given to them by the BOZO customers!

Should the owners of these places be HANGED or just bled to death?
