There is loads of great camping in southern California.
If you don't have time to go too far away from Los Angeles, try Buckhorn Campground in the Angeles National Forest. There's a pretty but short hike to a waterfall from the campsite. The campground is about an hour from downtown Los Angeles.
If you can venture a little further, try taking an overnight in the Los Padres National Forest near Ojai. You'll find loads of day hikes that will lead you to beautiful swimming holes.
And if you can take a few days away, definitely go to the Sierras. In my opinion, the Eastern Sierra is the most beautiful place on Earth. Camping near any of the thousands of lakes up there will be well worth the drive.

Leo Carrillo State Beach is awesome, with a sea cave, tide pools, decent hiking...
Malibu Creek is really cool too.
Both can be reserved on the Reserve America website.
