How do they arise? My bf has some on his back and I was wondering what they were?

Keloids are overproduction of keratin. These are scar tissues. Back and arms are usually the prone areas. Some are just too reactive to scarring that is why they develop keloid. Recently, Pulsed dye laser is used to improve it ( by flattening it).Also combination of injectables (steriods) are used. But these should be as advised by your dermatologist.
