Groucho Marx once said: "I find television very educational. Every time someone switches it on, I go into another room and read a book." Which do you prefer, reading a book or watching television? Why do you prefer one over the other and what are the pros and cons?

I would have to agree with Groucho. He may have been a comedian but if he gave advice like that he was a very smart comedian.
I use to read just about anything I could get my hands on until I came down with glochoma and can no longer read much, but believe me there's never a day go by that I wouldn't love to sit down and read a good book and leave the TV to the dumb bells.

I would rather read a novel. I keep track of every thing I read. I have read 297 books since I retired in June 1996. I do watch feel good stuff on TV. If you find good authors you will enjoy reading.
It's not good to have only one interest. You learn from both but I would say you learn more reading and being able to discuss the book with someone who read it too.

Books!

Television is someone else's interpretation of an authors work, while reading allows you to personally experience the authors vision. So you become involved and not just a passive viewer.

Television. Definatley! I hate to read. I don't have the patience to read. I do read things like billboards and signs ect. And I do like the readers digest mags a lot.. But only when I am REALLY bored.
I only finished 1 book in my life and that was in high school! And now I feel old! ((smile)) I'm going to go cry now.

Depends what I'm looking for. My instinct answer is "Books, books, books!!!!" but then I watch a lot of TV as well. I think I watch TV when I need a quick fix of entertainment. Turn off my brain, let the images flow in, enjoy myself. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy TV shows that stimulates the brain, but it doesn't require as much effort.

Any other time, I'll read.
